TR - Opportunity
My opportunities to fish have been few the past year or so. Because of
some server problems at work I had all ready accumulated 38 hours of overtime by 10:00 a.m. last Thursday. So when my boss came to me and said, "Get out of here. Go fishing or something." I didn't wait around for him to change his mind. I quickly jumped online and bought a fishing license and went home and grabbed my stuff. I decided on a small stream that is just three minutes from my house. The stream is actually the Spanish Fork River but most of the year it just has a small amount of water in it as most of the water is diverted for irrigation. Just enough water is left to support a population of brown trout. The fish dispersion in this stream seems kind of odd to me. The first section of this stream is a typical pool and pocket water type of stream. However, all of the fish are in the pools and none in the pockets in the stretches in between the pools. Seems a bit odd to me. But, I digress. This stream was probably not the best choice for the first fishing of the year. The water is crystal clear and, as mentioned, all of the fish are in the pools and spook very easily. Even a poorly placed long leader will put them down. Well, to be kind, my casting sucked. More than usual. After fishing an hour I had had nary a curious glance at my offered feathered morsel but had managed to scare the begeebies out of a number of rising trout. I then came to a pool that is fed by a three-foot cascade of water from an old diversion dam. I cast into the bottom of the pool then looked down to reposition my feet, looked up and started to recast only to realize that I had a fish on. Just my luck, FFOTY and I can't even claim it. I brought to hand a kind of skinny seven-inch brown and quickly released him. After a few more casts, my fly fly sunk in the turbulent pool but I kept an eye on the leader. It made a funny move sideways and I set the hook. Good grief. It worked! I had a fish on. This guy put up a heck of a fight but I soon landed a nice fat twelve-inch brown. I removed the hook from his mouth and paused to look at him. I then thought of my wife, grabbed a rock and whacked him on the head. He quivered and died. Now wait, it's not what it seems. Hear me out. My wife understands my love of fishing but she just cannot understand spending the time and money on fishing that I do and then coming home from a fishing trip with nothing but fish stories. Besides, she loves fish. She is from Rio and grew up eating lots of fish. So, when I paused and looked at the fish, I decided that she deserved a fish fry, so I conked the fish. My plan. then, was to keep four for a nice family meal, but the fish had other plans as I was only able to land one other fish, a nice plump ten-inch brown. They would have to do. Though not many fish were landed, it was a great day to start the season. I was home before my wife got home from work and had dinner well under way when she arrived. To say she was delighted with the trout would be an understatement. She even liked the way I cooked them. Russell Guilt killed the fish. |

That snippet above, did make me laugh, and darn it, I'm not buying your explanation of it! Great contribution, once again!! Tom |

2x. Or x2. I dunno; 2x seems a pretty heavy tippet for a 12" rainbow. :-) Thanks for the TR, Russell. Joe F. |
