Default Stick Steer Boat purchase dilemma.

I'm looking at buying an old fiberglass v-bottom boat. The boat itself
is far from pretty, but it seems very solid. The two main selling
points are that it has a brand new Mercury 50Hp outboard and a rebuilt
trailer with a upgraded Dexter axle.

My concern is in how the steering is set up. The boat is a stick steer
with the steering in the front. I am a novice and this would be my
first boat purchase. I'm afraid that being a novice I may kill myself
with that big of an engine on the back with me sitting up front with
the throttle.

Are there any stick steer experts out there that can help give me some
guidance? The person in question is a friend of the family and is
asking $3500 for the whole setup so money wise it is a pretty good
deal, but I may end up spending more in life insurance...lol

Have the seller take you out on the water with it and sit next to you
while you try it out? And you do know that you don't _have_ to drive
it full speed all, or any, of the time.
