OUTDOOR BRIEFS

FISH FOR FREE

Lake Mead waives cost of angling

Saturday has been set aside as Free Fishing Day in Nevada.

"It's your one chance during the year to get hooked for free," said Ivy
Santee, aquatic education coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
"No license or trout stamp is needed, and it doesn't matter whether you're
an adult or a child. Of course, all limits and other regulations still
apply." As part of Free Fishing Day, people also have the option of
participating in a fishing clinic that morning at the Hemenway fishing point
on the shore of Lake Mead.

The first 400 participants between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a
tackle box and have the chance to win one of 120 prizes. The kids also will
have the opportunity to learn about Nevada's wildlife and to earn their
Junior Ranger badges by completing a Fishing Passport booklet.

"Kids who take part will also have the chance to test their casting skills
and participate in a number of fun activities," Santee said. "If someone
doesn't have a fishing rod and reel, we will loan them one of ours. We will
also have plenty of bait and other tackle on hand should someone need it."

Event registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the fishing clinic will get
under way at 9 a.m. Activities will include knot tying, fish art and
wildlife identification.

Lake Mead entry fees will be waived for those who mention they are there for
the Free Fishing Day event.

Participants should bring hats, sunscreen and plenty of water.

For more information, call 486-5127 ext. 3503 or 3850, or 293-8990.

MEN ONLY

Fly-fishing skills will be taught for free

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will host a free, introductory, men's-only
fly-fishing class in honor of Fathers Day.

This two-part class will take place at 8 a.m. June 21 in the NDOW conference
room, 4747 Vegas Drive.

Casting skills will be covered in the second portion of the class, which
will begin at noon at Floyd Lamb Park.

Students also will learn basics, such as knot-tying, fly-fishing terminology
and the equipment needed to fly fish.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. Monday.

For more information and registration, contact Ivy Santee at 486-5127 ext.
3503.
