Default June Spalding County Sportsman Club tournament

Sunday - June 14, 2009 - Day 165

Spalding County Sportsman Club June Tournament
Lake Oconee - water stained to muddy - 86 degrees
Hot sunny day - fished 5:45 AM - 3:00 PM

At blast off we ran to a point I like to fish this time of year - shad
spawn on it and Mayflies hatch there. We were in Niles Triton - my
Skeeter is in the shop. Niles let me drive and run the troll motor
all day.

For the sites that pull my posts and re-post them without the courtesy
of posting my sig line, please visit my site at http://fishing.about.com
- for regulars here, I apologies for the spam.

When we got to the point I was real disappointed a dock light I like
to fish was not on. We started with spinnerbaits then buzzbaits.
Worked all around the point - about 100 yards of docks, seawalls and
riprap on deep water. No hits.

Near one end of the point Niles got a hit on top but missed, then got
a keeper on a Texas Rigged lizard. I got a short fish on a popper.

We worked back across the point with no hits then came around again.
The next pass I got a 15 inch bass on my popper, then Niles got a 4
pounder on a buzzbait. Worked on around and got several small bass.
Birds were in the trees eating Mayflies but they were thin. We also
saw a few shad still trying to spawn - real late.

Worked further around the point and I saw a swirl on the seawall and
cast a jig head worm to it and caught another 15 inch keeper. Nothing
hit for a good while so we worked back. Near where we caught the first
two I got a third 15 incher on a jig head, then a few casts later a
fourth. Within three more casts I got my fifth - all looked like
duplicates at 15 inches long. Had my limit at 8:30 AM.

We tried everything I knew for the next six hours and caught a bunch
of throwbacks, but no more keepers. Boat traffic got bad at about 9
AM.

With 15 minutes till weigh-in I told Niles we had to go - was a hard
10 minute ride to the ramp. Didn't count on the bad waves and the
Triton is much lighter than my Skeeter - bad ride. Way rougher than
my Skeeter although same length and motor size. We got in with less
than two minutes to spare.

At weigh-in it took 5 weighing 9.67 to win, five at 8.75 for second.
My five weighed 8.34 for third and fourth was five at 8.28. Niles 3.97
bass was good for big fish and he finished 7th with two at 5.48.
