Trolling

Do any of you guys use trolling for locating bass or mapping out structure
and breaklines?

I know that most tournaments do not allow it, but there are derbies that
allow any legal fishing tactic, and of course it could be used before a
tournament for locating likely migration routes.

Hi all, during the coldest part of winter here in central florida I
often troll open water in some of the local lakes that don't have
floating weeds.

I use a solo canoe, two baitcasters with different color hi vis line,
two rod holders mounted well back of the seat (to stay out of the way
of the paddle) two small fat crank baits and a lot of line.

Using a small hand held GPS I have found that running about 1 to 1.5
MPH does the trick. I find bass and huge crappie on cold days most
would not bother to go out.

Not sure why the long line does the trick, maybe the wobble of the
crank bait sends virbration down the line that causes the slow fish to
wander over to see what's going on.

I find it a fun way to spend a cold morning and get some good excerise
at the same time.

Yuma Bass Man forums. He posted it on the Ask Dave board. Dave gove some
good information on locating fish in shallow lakes in his reply. I had to
add my .02 as well.

My funniest trolling story was at Lake Oroville. I was trolling for trout,
for dinner. Small Rapala. No trout but 3x 4" bass. All on a 3" lure.
Wife was in hysterics over the bass catching and the size. Had dropshotted
and jig fished for one miss all day and then get 3 tiny bass on the trout
rig.

the CD-5 or 7 Rapala.

You realize when that starts happening that means there are lots of small
bass around, and you should switch to a baby bass pattern lure.
