TR: The Quabbin

Not really a TR, but Roger's TR reminded me that I still had some photos in my
camera I hadn't seen. When I saw them, I had the overwhelming urge to share.

Stan Gula and I took a break in early September to do some warm water fishing at
a local reservoir called The Quabbin. For an insight into the area, check out
http://www.state.ma.us/dfwele/dfw/dfw_quabbin.htm. The area we boated and fished
is called Pottapaug Pond. Pottapaug is a Nipmuk Indian word meaning "big fish
that white man cannot catch" or something along those lines.

As usual, I was outfished by the master, but you can see from the photos that it
didn't really matter. The place is simply beautiful and the weather was perfect.
We both caught our quota of bluegill, but have yet to bring up one of the big
largemouth bass lunkers that we know are there. I didn't think about taking any
pictures until we were heading back to dock. I wish I had thought about it
earlier, as we were able to get really close to several painted turtles on a
downed tree. Oh, well - these will have to do. These photos have been slightly
reduced in quality, but some are still 200K or better. If you want to just view

Looks like a nice place. I was impressed to see on the state website that
the record for an "all other" was 8lb 2oz. I must confess, however, to
being unfamiliar with the species...

Yes, the whole reservoir is as wild as you can get in Massachusetts. The
only developed shoreline is the three small boat launch areas. There are a
few signs of civilization - a few old stone walls traveling across the
hillsides and into the water. Some day when you're in the area we should go
out for a day - a one day license is really cheap. I'm planning on taking a
day to canoe the 'paug side this weekend (depending on baseball results) -
the 'paug is open to canoes and kayaks. Foliage should be good.

Nice pictures Tim. It is always nice to see what kind of waters the rest of
you are visiting.

I have a small hope that Willi L one day will start a website like yours, he
often has very nice pictures to show.
Peter Charles web site is also one of those that I like visiting. The waters
he visits are nice looking places.
Dave LaCourse web site ain't bad either, only it's more of a gathering of
ugly portraits designed to scare off ROFF newbies ;-)

Sounds good !

This spot would make a good place for a one day mini-clave. The one day
Quabbin-only fishing license is $5, parking is $4 per vehicle, and a boat with
fueled motor is $30 per day (near-dawn 'til near dusk.) If we could get two
roffians per boat, you're not talking big bucks. With Stan as a guide, we
shouldn't get TOO lost. Possible issue: one of the stipulations when boating the
Quabbin is that you cannot go ashore except at the boat launch areas, so you're
pretty much stuck on the boat for the duration - read: bring lunch and padding.
Another rule is that alcoholic beverages are not allowed, which should keep
attendance at manageable levels.

This has been discussed in the past, generally related to smallie fishing in
May/June when they come into the shallows to stake out spawning beds and can
be taken in flies.

June would be a mahvelous time of year, I'll bet. The Penns 'Clave will be a
distant memory by then, and all the fresh greenery will be out. Being a one day
event, though, could be a problem for anyone further than a few hour drive
because of possible inclement weather - not that this would happen in sunny New
England.
