Dan'l just called me from the land of the great fires. He and Cindy are
fine, they have lost some of their grape vines and"18 miles" of irrigation
system. One corner of their porch caught fire- but a neighbor was
successful in suppressing that. He is currently without landline telephone-
and sketchy cell phone, in fact he called me on a borrowed cell phone. He
wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts and let those know who have
tried to call that all is ok. He and Cindy are watching the fire line on a
distant hill at this moment. He said if anyone goes to San Diego, their
view won't be blocked by the trees :-(

Thanks for the good news! I hadn't had any luck getting through and was
about to try again after checking here. Good news about the house, too, and
the trees and vines will grow back. The 2003 vintage might have some smoky
notes though...

Cheers,
Bill

That's good news John, thanks for the update. From what I have seen on
TV it looks like there's plenty of danger yet, though.

Thanks for that info, John. Last night I tried calling all D. or Daniel Finns
living in that area. I made about 5 calls but never got "our" Dan'l. Great to
hear that they are ok and that their house was spared.

This was deja vu all over again as a co-worker lost his house in the
BC fires and now Dan'l. Good to hear that his property wasn't too
badly hit however, it ain't over till it's out.

Crossing fingers . . . . . .

If memory serves, Dan'l recently said something about the 2003 vintage being
pretty much a bust anyway........still I suppose that doesn't necessarily
mean one would scrap the vines and start over.

Wolfgang
and hey, there's always dolmades.

Rootstock might have survived if it was a fast moving fire and didn't
burn out the ground. Not much, but a point to start over.
