Popper Question

Hi,

Live outside of Boston.
New at this.

Have a pond near house with a fair number of Small and Largemouth Bass,
and also Yellow Perch.

Thought I'd try a small Popper, which I never have.
Have heard that they are very effective for Bass. True ?
Uncertain which kind to buy.

Which, in general work better:

the simple, plain, Popper, or the ones with a feather dressed tail ?

Why ?

BTW: can these small Poppers also be cast with a light
spinning outfit ? Is there some kind of weight/rig to use with them ? A
fly rod should be fine, but is there any practical way to use, also,
with a spinning outfit ?

I don't know if the feather tail makes the popper more enticing to the fish, though I suspect it does. I do know however that as the feathers take up water, the popper becomes more difficult to cast properly with a fly rod.
You can use a plastic casting bubble to cast flies (including poppers) with a spinning outfit. Simply tie the fatter end of the tear drop shaped bubble to your line, and tie a 3-4' leader to the narrow end and attach the popper to the leader.

I don't know if the feather tail makes the popper more enticing to the fish, though I suspect it does. I do know however that as the feathers take up water, the popper becomes more difficult to cast properly with a fly rod.

I fly cast for bass all the time with my fly rod. For some reason, the green-headed feather tail popper slays them. Castability isn't even an issue: the bigger the splash, the better.

All in all, try a bunch of methods and see what works for you; that's the essence of fly fishing, and bass are a great fish to start that process with.
