Default lighting a Tilley Lantern

Is there an easy way of lighting a tilley lantern on the beach without using
those really long matches
that blow out all the time before you've lit it?
Or am i missing something obvious?

Yes you use a small clip on attachment that you put meths in to heat the
generator,do it twice,on the second time just before it goes out open the
valve & hey presto, light, little time consuming but works every time & keeps
the glass clean.

i seem to of made an error, it's a coleman lamp, a dual mantle one, i just
thought they were all called tilley lamps, sorry for any confusion.it's only
about a year old, but there must be a quick way of lighting it!
Many thanks

Rich

My old Tilleys had a couple of half-moon shaped asbestos things in a
clip like a wire clothes peg that fitted around the stem below the
mantles, you soak them in meths and clip them on just under the glass
around the stem and lit them, pump up the lamp and when the mantle was
hot open the valve, worked fine for me and if your lighters are missing
you can probably find new ones or make them,

Terry L.

I use a Gas igniter purchased from a hardware shop, uses butane gas, unlike
matches still works when damp.

if you go to cooking shop you can buy a flame long reach gas lighter file
out the hole where you put your match through and light it.

sorry I was a bit ****ed the night I replied to your post.

You can buy a gas lighter at most shops that sell cooking gear that has a
long reach, just put it through the hole and spark it up, you can adjust the
flame length too.

Open the valve on the lamp slowly, and bingo, it should light.

Q) But how do you light a blow torch on the beach without using those
really long matches that blow out all the time before you've lit it?

A) Use a Tilley lamp!

On the fuel tank, paraffin, fuel tank pressure forced through the spray wand. Spray tube preheater pipe cutting around the cup in the flare of alcohol. Export of a warm paraffin wax spray fine spray in the tube and the entrance to the dome at the top of the jet is injected into the gas mixture.
