Default Mepps Spinner Blade Colors Question

Hello,

Not a Bass "scholar," but was wondering about this:

I fish a lot in a small Pond outside of Boston.
The usual; smallmouth and largemouth, with lots of yellow perch.

I can always get a load of them using a size 0 or 1 Mepps Spinner
(treble hook).

Has to be Undressed; the ones with a skirt just don't seem to attract them.

The ones that work always seem to be the ones with a Silver Blade.

The Gold, or the Black bladed ones (Fury, I think) with the spots don't
work either.
Just the Silver ones.

Mepps, I'm sure, sells millions of the Gold and Black speckled Blade ones,

So,

For you experts:

Under what conditions do, or would, the Gold and Black speckled blades
be expected to work "better" than the Silver bladed ones ? Why ?

Thanks,
Bob

Smallies, Brown Trout and other Trout...I have always used a black
body gold blade Panther Martin. Usually with a 1/2" piece of red yarn
on the hooks. This was in WI. Chartreuse works good too. Like the
Panther Martin over the Mepps most of the time. Down or upsize to
match what they are eating. Use a small ball bearing swivel with just
rings, not clasps.

I might try gold in muddy or algae bloom water. That being said I caught a
lot of bass in ages past on 1/6 oz Rooster Tails with either a black body or
a powder blue silver body, and a silver blade. They fancy colors worked
better on trout, but the bass liked it simple.

Some of my favorites a gold spinner and body, black spinner mainly and
white or yellow spots, yellow spinner mainly with red spots, and for German,
combinations of brown as I believe they are cannibalistic. All with gold
tubular bodies.

I have a small stream down from a dam of a lake of about 20 acres. No one
likes to fish it because you have to crawl through bushes and tunnels some
times, and there are chiggers and ticks. BUT, there are nice holes and
eddies and hiding places. I have hooked up with 18 inchers there, just hard
to land them. Have taken 16 inchers there, but commonly around 14 inches.

I go to the public fish cleaning station. "Where did you get those?", they
excitedly ask. "Oh, right there on the dam, rainbow PowerBait. Whoosh!
Off they trot. I love that stream, stickerburrs, snakes, chiggers, ticks,
and all. And looking at it, you wouldn't think there was room for any fish
in there. You just have to get down in the gut of the beast. Nice rainbows
in there, too.

In general, if I had to pick ONE, it would be anything with a gold spinner.

Steve
