Retired now, I write the above website purely for fun. It has been going for
about three years.

It attracts a worldwide audience and has become surprisingly successful. Try
typing in Self-Sufficiency in Google.

A trip to Ireland caused me to think about sea fishing - not a subject I'm
over familiar with.

You can see the results of a first article on "Fishy Alternatives"
http://pages.britishlibrary.net/patgardiner/fish.htm

Can anyone give me hand with a follow up? The location will be general -
Britain, Ireland, US, Canada, NZ.

How would you set about changing from raising your own meat to catching your
own fish. Can it be done? What would you need to do? Are there licensing
considerations? Can you collect shellfish freely? Will a rod and line from
the beach be enough or will you need a boat?

Any help greatly appreciated...where appropriate, I'll be glad to credit on
the page or even, for any able writers, add a separate article.

Regards
Pat Gardiner

Ah Ha, are you refering to the unusual use of the adjective "pacific" to
describe what was called the Western Approaches" when I was a boy.

Now they call it something PC like "Celtic Sea" don't they?

I did wonder if the adjective was wise, but after a few days on the west
coast staring at Atlantic breakers, "pacific" fitted the bill for very
placid sea.

Come on now lads! A rod, a line and a nice shore, can I feed myself?

or are you all escaping from the domestic life and living on hope?

I did see notices limiting the catch to two sea bass, or was that a tourist
trap for the gullable?

Why?

I have not even been fishing. I asked some questions. You are being very
cryptic.

I'm not talking about buying a trawler, that I can understand might cause a
few minor problems chuckle or even suggesting selling any of the catch.

Are you saying that I have suggested something illegal?

Pat Gardiner

No - I think he was merely implying that using a rod & line off the UK coast
would certainly not guarantee you enough to eat these days. You might get by
in the summer (unless you're allergic to mackerel), but you'd get pretty
damn thin in the winter

Right. Understood thanks.Appreciated. I thought the beggars were all under
the pier hiding from Spanish trawlers.

I was at Felixstowe for many years and the office junior used to bring me in
magnificant cod to make up for the matchsticks holding his eyes open. Times
change.

I suppose you would need a small boat - and that would simply increase the
expense but not the catch?
