I am thinking of buying from e-bay a abu 5000 baitcaster reel.
With the level wind to the front, the spool release trigger is to the back
/ right.
With the reel on top of the rod I will have to wind with my right hand.
Is this a right or left hand wind? confused! what is considered the norm
I wind a fixed spool reel with my left hand.

I'm right handed and would consider that multiplier is quite standard; most
reels when on top are wound using the right hand.

I would say that it is 'right-handed' but that is only my opinion.

If it's an ABU 5000 then it's right hand wind, if it's the 5001 then it's left
hand wind but I stand to be corrected.

Should that have read *multiplier with the right*
Reading the replies and thinking about it, if it did not have a level wind I
would find it more natural to feed the line back on with my left
hand,winding with my right.
I have bought it anyway, unused, display model without its box for £45.
Next question. how do I prevent a birdsnest? LOL

Thanks.

No problem, just don't put line on it :-)

My particular Abu reccommends loading to within a 1/4" of the spool
end top. Then screwing the brake in until the casting weight only just
pulls the line off the spool when the release is operated.

If daylight fishing, I generally release the brake and control
the decent with my thumb. This is almost foolproof, and can give hours
of pleasure untangeling line when you get your timing wrong.

Years ago I bought a 10ft bass rod with an old bakelite "Penn" multiplier.
"No brakes" from a tackle shop in Mevergissy Cornwall. the guy told me it
was a good setup. The shop is now, the last time I was down their a Café.
Without giving it a thought, I attached a 2oz lead and cast out , just as
I would have done with a fixed spool reel.
Having seen the lead land in the water about 15yds out, I looked down to
see this almighty tangle of line,
needless to say that was my fishing over for the day. I sold the reel and
carried on with the old faithfull fixed spool untill now.

that bit of ABU advice in the leaflet;
about screwing the caps in, only applies to Lure fishing,
do that with a 3-5oz weight on it and you will destroy (crush) your
bearings.
the spool should have a slight end to end movement not much tho.
prob half a millimeter or so, enough that you can feel it.
