Hey Christian, nice to see you back. Where the hell you been?

Closer than you think. About a year ago, I decided to hell with this
fishing thing, and moved over the pond to a windy city right

inbetween
you and Forty.

No ****, Chicago? Welcome to the neighborhood!

I've yet to wet a fly here, but I think I still remember how, so

count
me in for a clave.

Cool. Looking forward to meeting you.

Wolfgang

Don't know yet. I'd prefer something other than Black Earth, myself.
It's among the least appealing trout streams I've fished.

I vote for an hour west of there, the name of the town escapes me now but
the Green and another stream comes to mind.

Haven't seen Clark for a while but he is still around, have something
reasonably urgent?

Try www.fishandgame.org.nz under eastern region for Rotorua info, let us
know when exactly you are coming and I will see if I can make it up.

No disrespect intended Christian, but I would feel less than honest if I
took someone out into that Pine Tree farm to fish canals, man made lakes and
the Rangataiki. New Zealand is known for its idyllic back country streams,
wild non stocked fish and solitude. To access them is no further than the
drive to the area you fished for stocked fish in man made lakes. It does
require some pretty specialist knowledge in comparsion to our lakes
fisheries however.I feel sorry for the anglers when this happens and it does
happen quite a bit with guides who are based on the Rotorua lakes area and
consider the hand planted pine farms to be "back country"... but to each
their own, I guess it's all buyer beware.

I do not know of Ernie and I sure he is every bit the nice guy you say he
is, but he took you to a pretty poor area. I am sure the fishing appeared
good by the standards many would internationally apply, but it is far the
being the good fishing that New Zealand offers or is known for
internationally.

In fairness I visited the website you gave and was disappointed to see a
photo of a small stream meant to be an indication of where someone might
fish when it is actually closed spawning water. The statement "count the
trout" is seemingly deliberately misleading from an anglers point of view.

There is no licensing of guides of in NZ and it is certainly a buyer beware
situation. It appears that Ernie is a very capable lake fisherman from his
charter boat. I am sure he is very good at that aspect, but the fly fishing
experience you got was not as good as it should have been by a long shot.

My brother and I are going in Mid March in the Rotorura to Lake
Taupo region.
If anyone has some guide or stream reccs would appreciate it.

I fished with this guide for half a day.

Ernie is a friendly down-to-earth guy, with a good sense of humor, and
the fishing was great.

We went to Rangitaiki, Flaxy Lakes and the Channel.

Try Simon Robertson of Rotorua Trout Safaris Ltd. Nice guy, great guide, knows
some outrageously beautiful places to fish and his wife makes a great lunch
