Default new to carp fishing - need tips.

Ok - new to this carp fishing game.

went to a day ticket place (Fennes in Braintree Essex. (Hill and black
pond)) and blanked two evenings on the trot.

Tried boilies with PVA bagged pellets on a helicopter rig. (about 6-8
freebie boilies and a couple of dozen pellets in each bag)
tried hair rigged luncheon meat. (chucked out some freebie bits of meat in
a PVA bag too)
tried floating dog biscuits.. (they ate every one bar the one with the hook
in it)

how would you recommend a newcomer to carp fishing go about getting 'em on
the bank.

I use one rod..
should I be fishing the deep water?
the margins?
am I not giving enough freebies?

this is correct.

as is this!

A sure sign that they can see your line, try rubbing a tiny drop of fairy
liquid on the last few feet which will sink it below the surface.

You should get used to catching smaller specimens first IMHO to get you used
to their traits and used to landing and releasing them and work up to your
first double, then work upwards fom there if you want the bigger
ones.....find a fishery that has a well stocked carp pond but nothing bigger
than 8 or 9 pounds in weight - they are very wary once they reach double
figures and are a different kettle of ..er ..fish!

::

Carp don't follow any particular patterns - I caught a thirteen and half
pound fish the other day in forteen inches of water........you can catch
carp in any part of the lake, on the bottom, midwater or on the surface.

:: am I not giving enough freebies?
::
It all depends on the water - where there are a few largeish fish living, i
tend to scatter small particles over a wide area (about 5 metres square)
with my hookbait in the middle, where they will come and 'browse', just
sniffing about and having a nosey around.....I find this tends to work
better than high concentrations of bait in small areas (PVA bagfulls) *but*
if there are a lot of carp and competition for food is a major factor, then
highly concentrated baited areas will produce fish as they all try to get
stuck in at the same time.

I also don't particularly like using boilies as I feel carp avoid them on
most commercial waters and find that drilled pellets and meat are far more
productive.

Everyone does from time to time.

Complicated:

Q. What does all that mean in English?
A. It means you've been reading too much and not watching the fish.

Where are they feeding? Fish there.

No idea. Maybe you're using too many.

OK. Keep it simple until you find you need the extras.

Start with bread and worms. Tie a #6 hook to the end of the reel line,
nothing else.

If the fish are grubbing the bottom hook a worm by the middle and drop it
just in front of the fish. Don't scare it. Watch where the line cuts the
surface for signs of a bite.

If they are patrolling the surface or the extreme margins drop in half a
dozen or so breadcrusts close to the downwind banks where they will drift
hard into emergent or overhanging vegetation. Watch for signs of fish
taking them. Get into a position where you can -lower- a crust baited hook
into a similar position. Keep all the line off the surface but hold a foot
of loose line which you release to the fish if you get a take. As soon as
the loose line has gone strike and hold hard. It's wise to wear waterproof
clothing for this method.

If they are among lilypads or if there are too many ducks about for crust
fishing pinch a large breadflake on the hook and drop it against a lilly so
that the line runs over the top and holds the bait a few inches below the
surface (you can do this with other surface vegetation too) Watch the line
on the lily for bites, hit and hold here too, you mustn't let them get their
heads down. Throw the occasional flake into gaps between the lillies as
free samples.

(While beginning) If you cannot see what the carp are doing - go elsewhere
and fish for something else.

Cheerio,

You are my Guru.

? No hook length or float?

This sounds an interesting method, I have never caught anything with
bread.
Bye.

It happens to everyone, but why not give it up and do some proper fishing
rather than chase around after these big fat lumps of flesh?

Just one knot, nothing to snag and no weakpoints.

This sounds an interesting method, I have never caught anything with
bread.

It's easily my most used bait. I sometimes go half a dozen trips without
taking any other bait.

PVA bags are a good idea in certain situations, the distance from the hook
to the leger weight is reduced to about four inches so that it fits inside
the bag, hook and bait in one corner, leger in the other.
Then you can fill the bag up with (dry) baits such as pellets, meat or corn
(rolled in groundbait dust) or anything else you like.
Lick the top edge of the bag and twirl it around to seal the package and
then launch it as far as you like.
It's the best way to get a piece of luncheon meat a long distance with a
handful of bait surrounding the hookbait........the bag melts after about
ten seconds.
I use them from time to time when the situation warrants it, but most of my
carp are caught (as you said) with no end tackle other than a hook, using a
piece of bread or pre-soaked dog biscuit.

A size 6 hook? after sharks!!

A size 10 will be a better bet (harder for carp to see them)
10lb line

Floating bread is a top bait, sweetcorn is anoither good bait

Forget what they say in the mags.

If they see your hook they will spook and leave your bait, It happens to
everybody.

What you are doing in general is ok, but up the feed as they will be coming
off sporning, and will be well hungry
Fish the margins

Sunday I only got 2 out on top, the rest caught were 20cm under the surface
with sweetcorn.

and why go for carp? Catfish are better

This is good advice! I fished a local day ticket water today in East Devon
and had 4 carp between 15 - 19lb from the surface. Each fish was caught on
scopex flavoured chum on a size 10 hook. Anything bigger and not only do the
carp see the hook, but it also sinks your hookbait. You might also want to
try hair rigging with a size 12.

I imagine your water is fished hard with boilies, so try a 'back to nature'
approach. Maggots and worms will always catch, but it's also worth giving
cockles a try. You will need to feed quite heavily to get the carp to feed,
but once they do, they can't get enough of them.

Cheers

You can go a lot bigger with bread, especially if you don't let any line
onto the water surface. When fishing really close and holding a big, fresh
carp on the surface the hookhold is under considerable pressure so a bigger
hook with larger wire is less likely to bend and also less likely to cut the
fish's mouth.
