Default Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier rubble piles

Most people who live in or around the Tampa area know that rubble from
the center section of the old bridge was placed around the ends of
that bridge which still remain (and serve as fishing piers.)

The question I have is - was there any rhyme or reason as to how the
rubble piles were arranged ?? I am sure there must have been .......

But, are they on one particular side or area of the fishing piers ??
Or were they placed in various areas around both sides of both piers ?

Parallel ?? or perpendicular to the piers ?? Are they within easy
casting distance ?? Are they visible at all, maybe during low tide -
or at certain times of the day ???

I've only been to the area twice - both times as a tourist, not as a
fisherman ... but I do want to fish the area, relatively soon. I was
also curious if anyone has thoughts as to which pier, the north or
south pier - is more productive .....

thanks

The old skyway bridge was taken offshoar and turned into the 7 mile reef
found on any fishing chart. its laid out into several clusters in an
approximately 1/4 mile dia.. as far as rubble around old skwy ive never seen
any (ive dove the bridge several times for crabs) ive trolled between the
old spans where the old pilings were and have been quite productive with
grouper in the fall and spring. as far as which side is better.. i dont know
there is a cluster of rubble at the tip of the south pier to the west that
hold snapper at night but you would have to have one hell of a long cast to
reach it..if you do fish the bridge stick close to the pilings.. there is
nothing but sand in the middle of spans... Godd luck and tight
lines............Jason

I am only familar with the south pier. There is PLENTY of bridge
rubble on the west side (away from the new bridge). I don't fish
there much unless spanish mackeral or tarpon are running but anyone
with a depth finder will tell you that the bottom is littered with
large rubble.

Quote from the offical homepage:
"The Skyway State Fishing Pier was constructed by removing all the
material from the center of the original steel and concrete bridges,
placing it in strategic locations both around the fishing piers and
off shore in the gulf, and tying the dead ends of each of the spans
together to create a three quarter mile long pier on the north and one
and one half mile long pier on the south side of Tampa Bay."

Good luck.
