Default That 4 plus pound kicker at the end of the day

Hammer had a good spot to start. We nailed two good fish right off the bat
on cranks. One a little over three pounds and one right at. Then nothing.
Hammer managed to crank out two more rats, but we spent the last several
hours sweating out even catching a limit much less being in the money.

Then finally it happened. I flipped a fish in the current. Thump! Hard
hook set and it never moved towards me. It dived into the brush. There I
was yelling at Hammer to back up the boat and trying to keep that fish from
burying up deeper int he tulies. Finally it swam free.

I tried to lift with the rod to bring it up, it dove hard. Zzzzzziip!
Zzzzzzzzip! Zip! The rod surged each time he dove away. Finally with gentle
lifting I brought it up. Hammer was right there with the net.

I was momentarily clueless as Hammer pulled the net way. A 4+ pounder and
my partner refused to net it. Then I realized it had whiskers. Our kicker
fish was a 4 pound flathead.

Reminds me of a 15 pound catfish I took in a Tourney in NJ, thought I had a
game winner there!!!

A couple times last year I tied into a good fish late in the day that had me
yelling and screaming like an excited little kid that got off on me. Thois
time I was playing everything just right. I held him solid instead of
trying to horse hime out of the brush. I played him and let my rod and drag
do the job when he ran. What got me is that my partner pulled the net away
just as I brought the fish up. Talk about heart breaking. LOL. I saw the
net pull away a fraction of a second before I realized I had a whisker fish.
