One of my former colleagues has just done this. Cost £8k to ship his wife's
horse (reason for posting)

Well I'm here in canada and glad ;-) - I was quoted $ 6000 ( about 3000
pounds) by canadian shipper to bring horse back to Canada so I reckon your
friend maybe should have looked around a bit?? ( are you sure it was'nt
$8000?? - seems way way too expensive that....)
