Ok, I started this stupid useless thread.
So I now declare it dead and gone.
And also declare this 'Balvenie' post the winner.

Oh ****. Note to self......

On the topic at hand, I have always just attributed the tailing
off of activity on roff to the fact that a few years ago work
commitments led me to frequent roff less regularly, and that many
folks were understandably devastated by this and simply lost
interest.

thanks Jon - we've had about 200mm of rain the last 72 hours here - I could
do with a bit of Arizonia desert right now.

To see you pull the rug out from under your own feet. When this group
dies, you and Kenny will have nowhere to misbehave.

I can't speak for Ken, but I have all sorts of places to misbehave...

People who run them wont allow you on to any other fishing groups.

Then thing work out very well for them...I have no interest in any other
fishing groups, USENET or on the 'net...until the links posted in the
last week or so, I didn't even know the specifics on any of them. Yeah,
I knew they existed, but I'd never visited or signed up for one, and
have no intention of even occasionally lurking around one. I like being
able to at least have the choice of reading what I wish of totally
uncensored content, and I have enough self-control to read what I want,
ignore what doesn't interest me, and respond as I see fit. Besides, one
virtual bar/sandbox/fishing-hunting camp is enough for me. I don't care
about, much less feel the need to spend 12 hours a day, 7 days a week,
52 weeks a year posting stuff on every fishing NG, forum, and BB I can
Google up...

I noticed something interesting, I think.
Google has a lot of freely available statistics about
usenet traffic and usage patterns, on a group by group basis,
going back a long ways.

Some groups, like rec.woodworking, are statistically stable.
The average number of posts per day for rec.woodworking now
is roughly what it was seven years ago.

But traffic to rec.outdoors.fishing.fly is roughly 80% less
than it used to be.

Do we have fewer fly fishermen?
Or are they.....well. What is it?
How what why.

Too much liberal politics, not enough flyfishing!

Gene
