It is a casting rod for using on boats,you cast out & forward of the boat &
allow a bow of line to develop,when a fish takes the bait the water pressure
on the line keeps it tight & transfers the knock to your rod tip,it is
usually used in fast shallowish water so you can get your bait away from the
boat & out of the "scare" zone underneath.

I think it is the name given to a type of fishing rod for cast 'up tide'
from an anchored boat.

It is used for 'casting' as against a short boat rod with which you simply
drop your line over the side of the boat.

I could be wrong and am ready to be shot down ;}
