Default Green River..Flaming Gorge

Going to FG late August. Interested in what might be a good fly
pattern to tie and a nymph. Would a gold ribbed hares ear nymph work,
thanks for the advice

Nick Lyons says that on Flaming Gorge you should always try to match
the Rapala hatch.

Sorry.

I went fishing in the Gorge in the early 80's. My father's friend had
a good-sized powerboat with a big inboard so we roar off to structure
and then troll sinking Rapalas. I remember that it was a barren
landscape, lots of sculpted sandstone with a hard shale-like cap to
it, but very little vegetation. I found lots of fossil fish in the
scree right on the shore, certainly a highlight of the trip for a
fourth-grade kid with a dinosaur fetish. There was a cove of sorts we
boated past where a natural hollow in the stone made a fine nest for a
set of owlets. They were just fledging, and I recall huge unblinking
eyes on the ugliest sack of wet feathers I've ever seen. Think
roadkill with flashlight eyes. The fishing was good, and my father's
friend caught a big brown that was really close to a state record.
Mostly, we caught rainbows 18"+/- 3". Sorry I can't offer any fly-
specific information or anything from this century, but I do recall
the Gorge was an unusual place to be. Bring your camera.

I'm assuming you mean the Green below FG and not FG itself. There's
lots of web resources that you can find using google (google "green
river flyfishing" or something like that). I'd wait to closer to your
trip date and then start checking reports on the web to see what is
working. Offhand I'd say no, GRHE is probably not going to match
anything on/in the Green.

Jon.
PS: You might find a web site that has reports from last august, or a
hatch chart for the year to show what is expected in late august.

Assuming you are talking about the green below the FG dam, down thru
Brown's Hole? Its been a long time but I seem to remember something
about cicadas. But otherwide as far as I remember the standard box
worked. Poor, crazy students my pregnant wife and I went down in a
tiny 2 person inflatable in the late '60s. Good times, great fish.
Stay on the river down thru desolation canyon and you don't come back.
Or you could get a welcome warning shot from Area 51. Oh I forgot it
doesn,t exist.

Dave
