Sorry I somehow got on the wrong (now dead) 'other' fly fishing
group and could not find my msg. or your reply until now.

Would like to horsepack into the Bob Marshall and perhaps, over
the divide into White River country, although, that might be a bit
rigorous for me now. My fav. spot in the "Bob" got burned over in the
last round of fire but would like to see it anyway.

this is a trip a number of folks here have talked about, looked into
doing, then lost interest in for one reason or another. if this is in
the planning stage and allows for others to join, please send me an
e-mail and let me know details.

I've done it twice, but it was a long time ago. They weren't primarily
fishing trips, but I did a little fishing with moderate success.

If you go with an outfitter, which is necessary unless you have you own
stock and a clue, you don't have to worry about grizzlies. Feel
fortunate if you happen to see one.

Watch out for those aggressive deer, though. :-)

It was so long ago that I don't even remember where I fished. It was
mainly a sightseeing trip. Frankly, we were on horseback so many hours a
day that there was little chance to fish, and the outfitter wasn't
generally camping at fishing spots -- more at spots with graze for the
stock.

We live in NW Montana and I have hiked and ridden into the Bob Marshall
We now have 2 horses w hoprefully another one or 2 & 1 or 2 mules yet to
come

(in case my wife is reading this - I want a mule or 2 for Christmas-
We have the 40 acres - As a matter of fact we should have 4 mules)

I do not know where the White River is ??
Sun River - yes
We usually go in through the north western estern edges at near Galcier Park
by Essex - Beaver creek in the NW.
When hiking in (twice) we flew into Shaeffer Meadows.

It all maty be too strenuous for me now - also
as I have not gotten any younger in the past 11 yrds of living here.

Where are you thinking about going in and taking out?
Great Falls?

and When?

Thanks
Fred

Wasn't really planning anything 'formal' but just thinking. I have
contacts out there and plenty of places to fish. Best time to go is the
first two weeks of August.

My friends there are in Augusta, MT, a small town of about 5 bars, one
gas station, a couple of cafes and a gift shop. Very "Western". It's
o.k. with most if your dog goes in with you. It's possible they might
prefer the dog.

It's about 20 mi.straight west to the mountains and the trail head.
Other directions, if you know the right people, are trout filled brooks,
reservoirs (one of which has pike) and the lower Sun river, which has
some very nice browns.

By the way, Augusta is about 60 mi. straight west of Great Falls.
