Jackson Hole Hike/Fish backcountry suggestions?
Yes, that's the way my parents have done it as well, and the model
certainly does work. That said, it'd be great if she had ~some~ interest, so that we'd be able to take vacations to places that featured fly-fishing as a centerpiece, and that she would at least be able to participate to whatever degree she wanted. I don't see her ever coming along on the vast majority of my trips - but it'd be good to have the option open. Thanks for your thoughts... Tim I tried the same with my bride of 38 years, when we were dating and she didn't care for it - thank God! I didn't realize then what it would mean to go on trips with my brother and friends without her worrying about toilets, bugs, bathing, etc. I love her and we have a number of common interests, but fishing is mine. We've bicycled in Ireland, France and Switzerland and half of the USA together and I enjoyed it all, but it's still great to take the tent and get away alone or with my brother for a few days. Of course it could be great, if she truly enjoys it. But, to compromise on aspects that make it great for you could take a lot of pleasure away for you, and you could grow to resent it. Our relationship has worked with me having my enjoyments, her having hers and us having ours and neither of us is jealous of the others free time. Gene |

Thanks for the suggestions!
Ken, what is it that you like about Slough Creek up there? Anyone have any Tetons experience? Any other Yellowstone thoughts? tim In the Park I'd suggest hiking up to the third meadow of Slough Creek. Be sure to get your backcountry permit in advance and I'd try for 2S4 if you can get it. That's the best campsite on Slough Creek and it's about eight miles up the trail. |

The hike is easy, the scenery is spectacular, fishing for god's own native cutts is very good from third meadow all the way to the Park boundary (and beyond, but you need a Montana license), and campsite 2S4 is right next to Elk Tongue Creek patrol cabin and its outhouse. That's right, eight miles into the backcountry and you can sit down every morning and take a proper **** instead of scratching out a cat hole and squatting in the woods. I wouldn't be surprised if 2S4 is completely booked for the rest of the fishing season but there are other campsites up there. Try to avoid 2S6 & 2S7 those see a lot of horse traffic. Oh, and please quit top-posting, it's rude. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Jackson Hole Hike/Fish backcountry suggestions?
tom - there are so many places to hike and camp for fishing in
yellowstone. if you are willing to hike 5-8 miles, you can probably get away from most of the crowd. but, from my readings while out there and a single visit, slough seems very popular among hikers and outfitters. when makela, warren, and i were there in july, second meadow was all ours for most of the day. on our way out, i also fished a third of first meadow and didn't see anyone until i pulled out at the run closest to the trail. on that same day, mike and warren were told that third meadow was packed with fishermen. i suspect it's one of those destination spots that garners a crowd, and desevedly so. it is astonishingly, jawdrop beautiful. in july, the flies and mosquitos appreciate it too. just ask makela... indian joe and i walked back into the gardner from an access road to the "incinerators" (?)... there was still a bit of runoff and the water was high, fast, and off-color. it looked like a good spot to explore back toward its headwaters. my suggestion is get a good map/book, and find spots as far from the "villages" and the roads as you can tolerate. don't overlook the smaller or lesser-talked about streams. bechler looks real good to me...esp. in late august or september. it's also just around the corner from jackson. because it's boggy in spots, i suspect the grabber/biter/eaters are forces to reckon with in the warmer months. jeff Tim G wrote: |
