do they greatly increase the distance your casting because of the extra
loading you can place on the
rod? with out cutting your finger off!

Yep, I use one (bionic finger I think it's called).
Brilliant! You've got to use a decent shock leader, though. I find that I'm
far more confident and can exert much more acceleration into the cast.
