Pflueger Trion Baitcasters

As I posted last week I've decided to get back into bass fishing. All
of my bait casters are at least 12 years old which are Shimano's,
Daiwa's, and Abu Garcia's. All of my rods are IM6's. I've gone through
all of my reels and cleaned them up, lubed the gears, and changed the
line. They are all in excellent condition as I had them stored in a
secure out building.

So now I see there are IM7 rods and the choices for bait casters are
endless. Bass Pro has lot's of different models under their name which
I assume are made by one of the major manufacturers under the Bass Pro
Logo. The prices have changed quite a bit as well. Used to be a $100
bait caster was a killer reel. Now it seems a $300 bait caster is a
killer reel. It looks like to me the Trion is a pretty nice reel at the
$100 mark. I also assume it is made in China which seems to be the
standard anymore.

I'd like to hear from you guys on opinions on the Trion or any bait
caster you feel is a quality reel and is a good value. TIA.

I have been using a Pflueger Trion reel for a couple of years and
really like it - it has held up well and is very smooth.

You're right, a lot has changed in the past decade. But while costs have
gone up, some reels are still good value. Two of them that I like are the
old model green Shimano Curado 200 (which can be gotten on eBay) and the
Shimano Cardiff. Both can be had for $100 or less and really hold up well.

A buddy of mine has a trolling motor business on the Harris Chain in
Florida. He told me these days he buys nothing but Bass Pro Shops Extreme
baitcasting reels, which run $49 apiece. According to him they perform as
well as reels costing three or four times as much. I don't know for sure who
manufactures that reel for BPS, but I've head it's Pflueger. I'm looking
forward to checking them out when I go down there in February.

If you're inclined to spend more, take a look at the Ardent line of reels --
the only ones made today in the USA. I was very impressed with their reel
when I tested it on Kentucky lake in October.

I've got a Trion; it's a decent reel. Most of my reels are the older
Shimano Curado B; I think it's a better reel than the Trion but they're also
$30 more. I've found that I prefer to cast the Curado much more than the
Trion - there's just something about the body shape of the Trion that I
don't really care for. It has held up well after three years of weekend
fishing - it's been relegated to my crankin' reel.
