Left BPM Saturday morning at 6:15 am with buddies. Decided to try the
channel and edges between the CP buoy and the gas docks. Arrived in
that area to find about another 200 boats. As I am not one who likes
to work in crowds I opted to troll the no man's land between CP and
Buoy 78. Stayed mostly in channel and managed to boat one rockfish
(36" x 20#). Left the marina Sunday morning at 7:00 am to lifting fog
conditions. Due to the lack of success Saturday decided to work waters
nearer to Breezy and 40" to 60" on the western side. The lifting fog
decided to become blinding fog by 9:00 am. Radar equipped and could
not see other boats until they were within the 1/8 mile circle. Truly
scary conditions as well as dangerous. Stayed in the area until 3:00
pm with 3 rockfish to show for the days work, 35", 29" & 22". All
baits were parachutes behind umbrella rigs with 9" & 12" shad.

For those of you who don't know, the big ships are on Channel 13 VHF.
When weather conditions are as bad as yesterday they will periodcally
transmit give there location, bearing and speed. If you think you may
be in the way you can hail them on 13 and give your position and they
will locate you and give you a heading to get out of the way. Don't
use this if there location is Smith Point and you are at Buoy 78, try
to use when necessary as you talk time may be keeping someone else
from getting through that may be in harms way.

I overheard this conversation yesterday. "Vessel at location X you are
in the main shipping channel and in danger of collision, turn to
heading 123 and proceed." Vessel at location X you are on collision
course with tanker in 1/4 mile turn to heading 123 immediately."
Vessel at location X you are in eminent danger on collision course
with tanker in 1/8 mile take immediate action." Then this "Collision
is iminent in 10 seconds, countdown 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1."
Couldn't raise the vessel by radio and actually thought collision had
occurred. Everything turned out all right but for those listening to
this conversation it was truly a scary incident.
