Default Suit Filed to End All Hunting, Fishing and Trapping

Suit Filed to End All Hunting, Fishing and Trapping

In New Jersey

(Columbus) - Anti-hunters today filed a lawsuit against the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection to suspend all hunting, fishing and
trapping.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation is looking into the merits of the
case to determine what action to pursue.

The case alleges that the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife has
issued sporting licenses to convicted felons. To avoid future instances,
the plaintiffs are asking Judge Susan Reisner of the Superior Court of New
Jersey to suspend all hunting, fishing and trapping licenses until a
background check system for all license buyers is put into place.

"This is the most outrageous and blatant attack on sportsmen's rights that
we have seen in our 25-year history," said Bud Pidgeon, U.S. Sportsmen's
Alliance Foundation president. "To besmirch the reputation of sportsmen by
linking us to felons is unconscionable. Sportsmen are America's greatest
conservationists, paying literally billions each year to fund fish and
wildlife programs across the country."

It is illegal in New Jersey for any convicted felon to possess or purchase a
weapon, Pidgeon said. Criminal background checks would unnecessarily delay
the issuance of a sporting license. The lawsuit even asks that fishing
license purchases require background checks.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation protects and defends America's
wildlife conservation programs and the pursuits - hunting, fishing and
trapping - that generate the money to pay for them. The U.S. Sportsmen's
Alliance Foundation is responsible for public education, legal defense and
research. Its mission is accomplished through several distinct programs
coordinated to provide the most complete defense capability possible. For
more information about the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation and its
work, call (614) 888-4868 or visit its website, www.ussportsmen.org.

Mr. Lipman,
The source is clearly stated at the end of the organization's release. I
fail to see the constructive intent of your remark. Do you think we are
here to waste your time? I am sure you are aware that we as publishing
professionals are well schooled with regard to proper procedures for
citations and attributions. I am certain that if the USSA posted it, it is
accurate.

Hopefully, you will invest the same energy in helping to defeat those that
seek to destroy our heritage.

I don't see any authorative NJ sources.

I checked the "Trenton Times", "Asbury Park Press" and the "Newark Star Ledger" plus the NJ
DEP's Fish Game & Wildlife and the information was found at none of these authorative NJ
locations.

Mr. Ehlers:

You stated "Can you tell me why you think USSA is wasting...."
Because it "remains uncorroborated" information.

Where is it on http://www.cnsnews.com and where is on "reputable" news services ?
Specifically New Jersey ones. This is important NJ news therefore it would be news worthy
and posted at the NJ Judiciary site. So why is the information not @
http://www.judiciary.state.nj.us ?

There is lots of news about the Bear hunt in NJ. NONE can be found on the aforementioned
information. Give Google a shot and see what YOU find on both the NJ Bear hunt and the
supposed NJ DEP law suit.

Just because a site on the web says something does NOT make it true unless it can be
corroborated. Take the following URL for example http://www.flat-earth.org/ just because
they say the
Earth is flat I should believe it ?

Dave,
As a media person I can tell you that newspapers reporters are generally
lazy. The electorate waiting to digest what it is printed in the papers is
good part of the reason we have the problems we do. Give USSA a call. It
is toll-free.

Here is the CNS story: ... Now please get involved. We need everyone's help.
Thanks. James Ehlers

New Jersey Bear Hunt Faces Legal Challenge
By Robert B. Bluey
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
November 25, 2003

(CNSNews.com) - Animal protection groups joined with conservationists and
biologists to threaten legal action if New Jersey allows a black bear hunt
to proceed as scheduled for Dec. 8.

Critics of the hunt sent a letter
http://www.fund.org/uploads/DelawareWaterGap.pdf
to the superintendent of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
last week, claiming the bear hunt at the park would violate federal
environmental laws.

"Allowing the trophy hunting of bears for the first time in more than three
decades is bad enough, but allowing it to take place in a federal park with
imperiled species simply goes beyond the pale," said Michael Markarian,
president of the Fund for Animals.

Markarian cited a federal court ruling two months ago that found a hunting
program illegal at Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts. He said the
Delaware Water Gap is home to 130 species of rare and endangered birds,
mammals and plants.

"These black bears have never been hunted -- they are shy animals who trust
humans and will be especially vulnerable," added Sue Russell, policy
director for the New Jersey-based Center for Animal Protection. "Because of
that, an already tenuous population will be hard-hit, and the government
hasn't accounted for this at all."

Others signing the letter include the Humane Society of the United States,
the Animal Protection Institute, the Vernon Civic Association, the Raptor
Trust, eagle expert Len Soucy, wildlife author Hope Ryden, hiker Steve
Ember, fisherman Jack DeTalvo, and park user Donald Cunnius.

The debate over the bear hunt has intensified as Dec. 8 draws closer. Last
week the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation warned that New Jersey Gov.
Jim McGreevey could bow to pressure and cancel the hunt.

The sportsmen's group announced Monday it was looking into the merits of a
lawsuit filed against the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
to suspend all hunting, fishing and trapping. That action is separate from
the concerns about the Delaware Water Gap.

Bud Pidgeon, president U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation, said the suit
alleges that the state's Division of Fish and Wildlife has issued sporting
licenses to convicted felons.

"To besmirch the reputation of sportsmen by linking us to felons is
unconscionable," Pidgeon said. "Sportsmen are America's greatest
conservationists, paying literally billions each year to fund fish and
wildlife programs across the country."
