Last Saturday, July 31, I set my rod down next to the car at the trail head for the South Fork of the Hoh river. It's a Loomis rod with a Ross reel, my favorite medium duty rod and reel. If hear of it being found, let me know. I'll reserve the rest of the details for anyone who has the rod. I sympathize, sorta, but I have to ask - why would the person who _lost_ the item need to withhold identifying info? I mean, if someone finds a medium-duty Loomis with a Ross in the parking area at the trail head of the South Fork of the Hoh river, are you going to quiz the finder for specific details to prevent them from trying to phonily foist off upon you a different medium-duty Loomis with a Ross that was not, in fact, found in the parking area at the trail head of the South Fork of the Hoh river...? An easy $100 for the finder. Hmmm...not so easy if they have to go through all sorts of hoops to prove they found the right Loomis with a Ross that they found in the parking area at the trail head of the South Fork of the Hoh river... Thanks, You're welcome? Chas remove fly fish to e mail directly TC, R Thanks for your usual helpful comment, I toyed with the idea of not responding, but I just had to explain why it's actually a good idea to withhold some info. Yeah, the penalties for not explaining such can be _severe_ these days, what with the Patriot Act and all... Imagine that someone, you for example, sees my lost rod post, and sees a found rod post somewhere I haven't managed to look. You call the finder, give them the details I've posted and tell them to send it to Chas Wade at your address. Now the rod that almost made it home is lost for sure. Um, well, I thought of that, and I'll get to that, but first, take a minute and re-read your original post....I'll pause a minute while you do... Just because you can't think of the reason someone does something doesn't mean it's a stupid thing to do. Fair enough. But since I can and did think of multiple reasons why someone might do what you did mean that what you did IS a stupid thing to do...? I mean, I'm just askin'... IAC, the humor of your original post aside, first, I'll not be searching around anywhere for "Found!" rod posts, so I'll not being calling any of them, impersonating you, or giving my address as yours (and while "we" have our thinking caps on, think about that a sec...). And second, I'd offer that if there is a "Found!" post out there from the person who found your rod, and someone does see both your post and the finder's post, and that person is of such a mind to "steal" your rod, you've provided enough details already for such a person to convince the finder that it is their rod... OTOH, my guess would be - and it's just a guess, mind you - that master criminals aren't spending 25/8, 366 searching every FFing "forum" on the planet to match up "lost" and "found" posts in the hopes of scoring the odd fly rod...hell, all anyone has to do is go to the Hoh - I hear tell there are vast stretches of its parking areas just littered with rods... I'd like to close by offering some advice: lighten up, Francis... HTH, R Chas remove fly fish to e mail directly |
