Kayak vs. Canoe vs. Pontoon
I was wondering peoples preference between these three types of fishing
vessels. And the plus and minus's of each. Tim Apple P.s. If you couldn't guess, I'm shopping for a watercraft |

I've never been on one of those sit-on-top (SOT) kayaks that folks like, but I've paddled a standard yak and beyond not liking it ALL, I couldn't imagine trying to fish from the damn thing. My experience with a pontoon is assisting with the carry, the inflation, the assembly, the deflation, the reassembly, ... what a friggin' mess, and when the assembly is done you've got a freakish sort of pseudo watercraft that ain't worth a flyin' **** in any rainstorm. If you couldn't guess, I'm shopping for a watercraft A belated welcome home Tim, glad to hear you're (mostly) in one piece. My brother loves his kayak, I, on the other hand, love my pontoon boat. We both, on the other hand, *hate* canoes, having been dunked more than once in the damned things. You will, I'm sure, get other opinions as opinionated as mine on the other craft you mentioned. If you couldn't guess, I'm shopping for a watercraft All IMO...Since you are in Texas, if you are limited to one, a canoe with (removable, if possible) sponsons. Lots of nice overnighter-weekender-type water around. Stable, reasonably portable, and can carry more gear for trips. If you can have two in the armada, maybe add a kayak, but (and again, IMO), casting from a kayak is a pain, but for coastal/cay-key paddle-n-wades, it beats the canoe. As to pontoon boats, if they are large enough, they make decent party boats, I suppose... HTH, R |

Kayak vs. Canoe vs. Pontoon
They all have their pluses; I prefer pontoons because you can drive them
with your feet while you fish with your hands. |

Kayaks and canoes are better for transportation but I also think that pontoons and belly boats are better for fishing. You can also cast forward in them which is a big plus. Willi |

Why wouldn't you be able to cast forward in a canoe? I've been doing it, but I've been known to do the impossible before. -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

Canoe for me. I second that, but I also realize that there are people who for lack or experience or genetically poor ears or whatever, will never feel comfortable in a canoe. Probably a pontoon boat would be good for such a person. However, (I've posted this before), if I was going to buy a still water craft for fishing right now, I'd go to springcreekprams.com. Jon. |

Why wouldn't you be able to cast forward in a canoe? I've been doing it, but I've been known to do the impossible before. I should have said fish forward. You can cast forward but I don't like having all that bow out in front. I find myself retrieving from one side or the other. I think it interferes with the fishing. In a two man canoe, I think the guy in the front does have a good fishing platform. Willi |
