Default Montauk Sportfishing Report 5/24/04

5/24/04

It doesn't get any better than this. Bass and fluke are out of control, with
everyone catching their limits and throwing back the excess.

The stripers are in all the usual spots, and the smarter skippers are
finding a spot all to themselves and whaling away on fish, most in the 15-20
pound range, with enough thirty pounders around that it seems like every
boat is bringing back at least one a trip. The not so smart skippers all
seem to believe that the only spot that holds bass is the Elbow, so that
becomes a bit of a madhouse, with trollers and drifters all getting in each
others way. Add in a little fog and things really get interesting.

The fluke fishing is also too good, with lots of four and five pound fish.
The three fish bag limit is a bit of a problem though, with the head boat
captains having to act like the hallway monitors that everybody was so fond
of back in high school. Make three drifts and the angler has his limit, all
over three pounds. Then on the next drift he gets a five pounder. What to
do? The charter boats hold bass in their live wells, and cull out smaller
fish when they get a larger one. It doesn't work like that with fluke on a
head boat.
