Loading new fly line.

Sometimes, due to all those years of fishing without a hat in the hot sun,
us older fishermen loose certain bits of information that we think we won't
need in the future and then along comes that time when you really do need it
!

I haven't fly fished in years but with Spring just around the corner I
decided it would be fun to fly fish for panfish and bass in the clear water
creeks here in southeast Oklahoma.

Ok, here's that simple question: When loading floating fly line on the
reel, which end of the line does one attach to the backing, the end that
comes off the fly line roll first or the last of that roll ? This is a
weight forward fly line.

No - that's the end you attach to the tippet.

Hi DV,

They usually have a little tag on the back end that you attach to the
backing.

It is the end that you see first.

If you get confused, just measure back about 15' on both ends of the fly
line and compare the diameter at 15'. The fat end is for the leader and the
skinny is for the backing.

If they are both the same diameter and larger than the ends, it is probably
a double taper.

My first hint that I may have loaded it backward, open hand smacks forehead
here, is that it was darn near impossible to cast a big Arbogast bass bug
!!! With the wind !!

Now I'm fixed up, look out fish !!
