The morons who burn plastic in their campfires are also right at the

bottom
of the evolutionary chain. Good pistol targets, if only the authorities
would get lost for an hour or so.

As scary as it is, I'd be willing to bet that a vast major or those
who burn plastic are unaware that it won't burn and won't break down.

I forget the exact quote, but something along the lines of never
attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity. The
longer I live, the more I realize that most people are clueless.
- Ken

Oh, it's true. It's definitely stupidity.

My former neighbor was a great example. I used to have a ridiculously large
vegetable garden. The neighbor's daughter, who was maybe 3 at the time, used
to love to come over and munch vegetables and "help" in the garden when I
was puttering. The next season, the mom decided to give in to the daughter,
who was begging to plant something in their yard. They planted a 10x10 plot
of bush beans, an easy crop for a kid to have fun with. One day, when the
plants were knee high for an adult, I came home from work and the neighbor
summoned me to look at a bug problem on the bean plants. When I got there, I
found she had completely dusted the plants with one of the various
insecticide powders from Ortho. By "completely", I mean there was barely any
green leaf showing. This was done because out of 30 or 40 plants, perhaps 5
leaves in all had bug holes in them the size of a pencil. We got to talking
about how she didn't need to do that. Her husband leaned out the patio door
to announce that the daughter was up from her nap and wanted to see mommy.
The kid ran right into the bean patch to visit her plants, and in the
process, covered herself with insecticide dust. She even inhaled it.

It took a half hour to convince mommy to get the kid into the shower, and
another hour to convince her to get to the emergency room. Her reasoning:
"How could they sell the stuff if it wasn't safe?"

Unbelievable.

Um......while Superman's daddy was doing.......what, exactly?

Wolfgang
who, while loathe to interrupt a conversation between two gentlemen so
utterly free of malice, is nevertheless curious.

After the trees, they whitewashed fences cause it looked like so much fun.

One hates to cast aspersions (however unintentionally) on anyone's

integrity
or offer commentary on eyewitness accounts of events at which he was

himself
not present, but careful observers as far back as Bartram and Audubon (as
well as others too numerous to mention) have noted that herons do not
usually carry their prey.

But some heros apparently do so, maybe it was superman trying to **** off
mighty mouse?

Hm.....what do you think we can do to convince them?

Wolfgang
who, admittedly, is stumped.

Go back to selling drinks in glass bottles, and wear ironclad boots?

What free labor we provided was worth the safe, undeveloped place to camp,
worth the adult leadership, transport to the campsite and home again. I
have great memories of those days even though there were no wooden fences.

For real fun, we got to play baseball in an empty cow pasture. Most people
learned quickly not to slide face first. The same ones who never learned
that lesson usually didn't learn about not urinatinng on fences until after
checking for insulators.
