Hell, if I was gonna regret it I wouldn't have done it in the first place. ;-) I think you're right - most of my regrets are for things I didn't do. In the heat of summer I regret not fishing more when the air was cooler, and in the dead of winter I regret not fishing more when it was warmer. I regret not telling the people I love how much I do, and telling them more often. But, I regret having some not-nice conversations with people no longer reading or posting here (you regulars can BMIA) and I regret running off some newbies before I really knew who they were. There's a lot more, but I'd probably regret posting it. . . So I don't regret it later, I appreciate this group a great deal. When I last went fishing a week ago, I was thinking that nearly everything I was using and every action I took to catch some very nice fish was a result of being here, getting good advice, and meeting some way-cool people. I get to live vicariously through the TR's of people visiting places that I can now picture. ROFF rules! But I digress. . . -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

It is an electric fence you put up around your camping area to keep the brown bears away from you and yours. Most guided expeditionary type trips in Alaska have such a fence to protect you from the bears. I saw them in use on Moraine Creek. The female guide leading the three pontoon rafts (and one support raft) swears by them. Oh. I thought you meant to write "bear defense." Good thing I asked. Don't worry about us. We have it covered. BTW, I've heard from a friend who's floated the Kanektok that the worst bear problem, by far, is from the aggressive black bears at the lower end of the river. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

I recall an earlier thread here on unguided Alaskan trips and thought it a cool idea, the only reservation being the bear business..... Did y'all decide on an outfit like this one: http://www.alaskaraftingadventures.com/ ? I will be VERY interested in reading the TR of this adventure..... We'll have bear spray and a firearm or two. No bear fence, though. The next to last thing I want to do is to shoot a bear. You can guess what the last thing I want to do is (and it's not apologize on ROFF). Did y'all decide on an outfit like this one: http://www.alaskaraftingadventures.com/ ? I'll let Willi post the name of the outfitter. He's the one who's dealing with them. So far, they seem very good and have good recommendations, but time will tell. All they're really doing for us is renting us the rafts and some miscellaneous other equipment, and dropping us off and picking us up. I will be VERY interested in reading the TR of this adventure..... The kind of thing I'd like to do before I get too old..... I don't know how old you are, JR, but I'm 58. I worked my ass off most of my life, in places with no flyfishing to speak of, getting in maybe one or two fishing trips a year if I was lucky, and too often no trips in a year. I've wanted to go to Alaska for a long time, and I don't expect this to be my last trip there. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

When we get back....... The kind of thing I'd like to do before I get too old..... That's been my frame of mind lately too. My father put off too much of "his life" until he retired. Shortly after he retired, my mother became very ill. Then when she got better, my father had his second bypass and died shortly after. He never got to do many of the things he had always talked about wanting to do and things which he planned on doing when he retired. One of my mother's favorite topics is regretting not traveling when she was younger and stronger. I want to do a long canoe trip, a horse packing/backpacking trip, some more salt stuff, and..................... Willi |

So much to do and share, but so little time. BTW, is this a joke or what? http://www.fresh-h2o.com/html/kanekt...rFloaters.html |

I have some friends who used Pa Pa Bear last year, and they were very happy with them. This year they're using them on a different river, and I know of another group using them as well. I have a dvd of their float trip last year. All I can say is WOW! I would suggest 2 backup rods. ;-) brians |
