Question on flyswap
Fly-tying ROFFians,
I was wondering what the latest word is on how many flies we should tie for the big swap. I know there has been talk from the new swapmeister(s) of limiting it to 25, and I've already got 25+ of my pattern tied, but I need to know if I should keep going or not. Chuck Vance (who's starting to wonder if he should have tied glo-bugs instead of PMD cripples) |

The official un-official word is that Joe Fleischman is going to run the Great 2004 Fly Swap. I would expect an signup announcement on January 1. That's still 2.5 weeks away. And whenever it officially starts you will still have many weeks to do your tying... Actual rules and any limit on number of tyers will be Joe's decision. If anybody has ideas about rules, etc. you might as well post them now. -- Stan Gula http://gula.org/roffswaps |

Through consultation with the highest authorities (Tim & Stan), I will be assuming the mantle of swapmeister for the FS2004. However, inasmuch as the popularity of this swap is also its drawback from a workload perspective, the official announcement will endeavor to keep the required quantity down to a mangeable level for the tiers without limiting the number of participants. Some trick, eh? Jan. 1 boyos. Joe F. |

i reckon the swap is self limiting cos those who find it too many to tie
will not put their hands up to join "Big Dale" wrote in message ... Conan The Libraian wrote:snipI've already got 25+ of my pattern tied, but I need to know if I should keep going or not. Read: Keep going! If you already have 25+ done BEFORE the swap is even officially announced, there is no damn reason why you can't do 60! Well, yeah ... except I'll probably run out of #16 hooks and proper-sized hackle for the d*mn*d things. ;-) Perhaps we can make it optional to be in *both* groups if that may be the case??????? G I admit that would be tempting, but like someone (Willi?) said, it starts to seem like work after a couple dozen or so. Heck, if it wasn't for the fact that I tie in my workshop with a colebeer by my side, I'd probably have given up long ago. :-) Chuck Vance (not that I'm complaining, mind you ... I'm getting to where I can tie a pretty good Quigley; now I just need to go somewhere where there's a PMD hatch) |

Jan. 1 boyos. Ummmmmm, what's the deadline for those of us not yet old enough to fart dust and who will be out "celebrating" and probably not arrive home until the night of the 1st or morning of the 2nd????? Yeah, or those of us who will be in the Big Bend without net-access until Jan. 3rd? Chuck Vance (who wonders what he'll do with 28 #16 PMDs if he misses the swap) |

I have tried to get back to the Jellystone area with a fly rod at least every 3 years since 1954 and see no reason to quit now. Expect to see me on an old BMW motorcycle this year as I plan on going over to Seattle after the clave...Ihave never ridden from there to San Diego before and have wanted to do that run all of my life. I have become a bit jaded on the FFF International Conclave as they seem to discourage those that prefer fishing for warm water fishes. Big Dale |

Wow, tying a #4 *anything* would be a treat after 28 of those #16's. :-) I've been tying parachute Adams for visibility, but even I probably could manage to see a #4 Adams. So, anyone want to have a flyswap that's nothing but oversize versions of classic dries? ;-) Chuck Vance (no, I'm not volunteering to be the swapmeister) |

Warren wrote:snipThere
really isn't all that much warm water fishing up here so I doubt it is much of a serious issue for most people. There are supposedly ponds up here that have perch and some bass, but they are few and far between. I haven't found any around here, but it sure would be nice to find a few. -- Warren I read that Gary LaFontaine was working on a book about bass fishing and I wish that he could have completed that project. Perhaps Craig Matthews or Scott Sanchez could help. I know that Scott was exposed to bass fishing while he lived in Texas. The FFF claims to be for all fish in all waters, yet when I o to their International Conclave I seldom see anyone tying warmwater or sal****er flies. I doubt if 2% there tie those type of flies. They simply don't invite them to tie, of course the obvious exception is Billy Munn and you should never pass on the chance to watch the world's best do deer hair. Big Dale |
