Question on flyswap

Fly-tying ROFFians,

I was wondering what the latest word is on how many flies we should
tie for the big swap. I know there has been talk from the new
swapmeister(s) of limiting it to 25, and I've already got 25+ of my
pattern tied, but I need to know if I should keep going or not.

Yeah - it would *almost* tempt some to wait for an official announcement, eh?

The official un-official word is that Joe Fleischman is going to run the
Great 2004 Fly Swap. I would expect an signup announcement on January 1.
That's still 2.5 weeks away. And whenever it officially starts you will
still have many weeks to do your tying...

Actual rules and any limit on number of tyers will be Joe's decision. If
anybody has ideas about rules, etc. you might as well post them now.

Unofficially, Stan is correct. Through consultation with the highest
authorities (Tim & Stan), I will be assuming the mantle of swapmeister for
the FS2004. However, inasmuch as the popularity of this swap is also its
drawback from a workload perspective, the official announcement will
endeavor to keep the required quantity down to a mangeable level for the
tiers without limiting the number of participants. Some trick, eh?

I would say keep tying. Whenever I fish in The Rockies, I always wish I had
tied more. The PMD hatch has always been my favorite to fish when in Montana.

60! Perhaps we can make it optional to be in *both* groups if that

I admit that would be tempting, but like someone (Willi?) said, it
starts to seem like work after a couple dozen or so. Heck, if it
wasn't for the fact that I tie in my workshop with a colebeer by my
side, I'd probably have given up long ago. :-)

You might try upsizing to a size 4 and tying a few to try during a hex hatch. I
had a friend that found a size 4 adams worked on Town Lake a few years ago
during a hex hatch.

Wow, tying a #4 *anything* would be a treat after 28 of those #16's.
:-) I've been tying parachute Adams for visibility, but even I
probably could manage to see a #4 Adams.

So, anyone want to have a flyswap that's nothing but oversize

I can kind of understand why because of the location and all. There
really isn't all that much warm water fishing up here so I doubt it
is much of a serious issue for most people. There are supposedly
ponds up here that have perch and some bass, but they are few and far
between. I haven't found any around here, but it sure would be nice
to find a few.

I read that Gary LaFontaine was working on a book about bass fishing and I wish
that he could have completed that project. Perhaps Craig Matthews or Scott
Sanchez could help. I know that Scott was exposed to bass fishing while he
lived in Texas.

The FFF claims to be for all fish in all waters, yet when I o to their
International Conclave I seldom see anyone tying warmwater or sal****er flies.
I doubt if 2% there tie those type of flies. They simply don't invite them to
tie, of course the obvious exception is Billy Munn and you should never pass on
the chance to watch the world's best do deer hair.

I wouldn't go to Texas for a FFF Conclave if my interest was trout
fishing even though they claimed to be "for all fish in all waters."
I imagine that they limit the subjects to mostly trout fishing at the
conclave held here because that is what is bringing in the people to
the event.

People come from all over the world and expect to see warmwater as well as
sal****er as well as trout. That is why they call it their International

So if I hold an International (meaning everyone is welcome) ROFF
Conclave up here, will you expect me to get you into bass, tarpon,
bones, salmon and steelhead? ;-)

Big Dale, it doesn't make any difference to me because I am not a
member. I don't care if they call the event "The Free Beer and
Hookers Conclave." I still probably wouldn't go (more than once or
twice) and certainly wouldn't attend with expectations of good scotch
and high class women. g

Basically I don't know what to tell you and was just offering some
possible explanations. Perhaps you should draft a letter and a
petition to circulate among all of the clubs in Texas so that they
change the format for the "International Conclave."

No. But if you were the FFF and claimed that the best tyers in the world would

I wasn't getting testy at all. As a matter of fact, I thought the
post was funny. Well, at least it was meant to be. You didn't like
the sewer water bit? Brings a whole new meaning to brown trout. g

creeks iced over?

Some are but the rivers have fishable days. Even if there is no
fishing, I still have some fun projects coming up. I am going to
build a rod this winter. Should be fun.

elk elude you?

Yeah, those bastids kept running into private property. But I did
kill a buck while out looking for elk. Talk about a drag from hell.
I was thankful I didn't get an elk. g I wish I would have had more
time to chase elk this year though. I only ended up going twice
because of my work and Jodee schedules.

work got you down?

Hell no! Way better than working at that damn lumber mill.

Yeah, I hear that is a great movie. I almost bought it the other day
for Jodee as an Xmas present. She loves movies with horses in them.
