Is it still fly fishing if you use live bait?
My dad used to use a floating fly line to fish night crawlers in Oak Creek
for trout. Presentation, was exactly the same as using a heavy wet fly otherwise. I was reading something recently and thining that it would be a good way to get a little more distance dead sticking a small minnow. (then again maybe not. That minnow would sure get dried out swinging through the air. LOL. -- Bob La Londe - Webmaster www.YumaBassMan.com Tornament Director www.YumaProAm.com *** Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com *** |

Probably not but who cares? It is lots of fun and very, very effective. Bob talked about his wise dad then he says: I was reading something recently and thining that it would be a good way to get a little more distance dead sticking a small minnow. (then again maybe not. That minnow would sure get dried out swinging through the air. LOL. And, it you substituted one of your little plastic minnows for the live one, you're back to pure fly fishing. It doesn't make any difference. In fact personally I'm very interested in what new things ALL bass fishermen are doing and enjoying. It may be blasphemy to fly fisherman but my grandson and I are having a blast with Rodney Long's Wiggle Rig. With Power Pro on a Shamano spin reel mounted on my 9 1/2 foot 9 weight Loomis fly rod, my grandson has used worms and plastic minnows to catch bass and bluegill. As a fly fisherman I am just amazed at how far it throws!!!! It would be a short hop for us to switch to live bait. Hmmm... You've got me thinking. g Whoa! Is it still fly fishing if I use plastic worms with a spin reel with Power Pro instead of a fly reel and fly line? g Good luck! John |

It's better than just live, because they keep wiggling long after a minnow would tire, now you have a bait that looks real, smells real, taste real, and acts like it's injured, and panicked. Some times you can find small minnows in a jar that have been pickled, these are awesome, so are frozen shad -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Mojo SpecTastic "WIGGLE" rig, SpecTastic Thread, Boomerang Fishing Pro. ,Stand Out Hooks ,Stand Out Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

Fly fishing is using a fly, constructed of hair, feathers, maybe some foam rubber and thread, delivered by the line casting the lightweight "lure". With fly fishing, you're trying to fool a gamefish with an imitation. Using live bait, regardless of what rod/reel combination, is livebait fishing. Sure, it's fun and still a challenge, but it's not fly-fishing! -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

Well now.....I can honestly say that I, as well, have never put a bobber on
my fly line. However, there have been occasions where I have actually put my fly line on a bobber. Makes for a great strike indicator for my bobber. Of course, I don't think I would call what I do with a fly rod even fishing, no matter what is on the end of the line, bait, lure, fly, etc. I would call my fly fishing technique quite embarrassing, even though I enjoy it.....:) -- Sandy Joren Il pesce tutto il giorno.
