My dad used to use a floating fly line to fish night crawlers in Oak Creek
for trout. Presentation, was exactly the same as using a heavy wet fly otherwise. I was reading something recently and thining that it would be a good way to get a little more distance dead sticking a small minnow. (then again maybe not. That minnow would sure get dried out swinging through the air. LOL. -- Bob La Londe - Webmaster www.YumaBassMan.com Tornament Director www.YumaProAm.com *** Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com *** |

"Bob La Londe" asked "Is it still fly fishing if you use live bait?
Probably not but who cares? It is lots of fun and very, very effective. Bob talked about his wise dad then he says: I was reading something recently and thining that it would be a good way to get a little more distance dead sticking a small minnow. (then again maybe not. That minnow would sure get dried out swinging through the air. LOL. And, it you substituted one of your little plastic minnows for the live one, you're back to pure fly fishing. It doesn't make any difference. In fact personally I'm very interested in what new things ALL bass fishermen are doing and enjoying. It may be blasphemy to fly fisherman but my grandson and I are having a blast with Rodney Long's Wiggle Rig. With Power Pro on a Shamano spin reel mounted on my 9 1/2 foot 9 weight Loomis fly rod, my grandson has used worms and plastic minnows to catch bass and bluegill. As a fly fisherman I am just amazed at how far it throws!!!! It would be a short hop for us to switch to live bait. Hmmm... You've got me thinking. g Whoa! Is it still fly fishing if I use plastic worms with a spin reel with Power Pro instead of a fly reel and fly line? g Good luck! John |

You've got me thinking. g When using "live" minnows on it,, kill them, put the hook through the mouth, and out the top of their head, it makes them stay on better, and gives them a much better action that lip hooked, it also works with dead shad. It's better than just live, because they keep wiggling long after a minnow would tire, now you have a bait that looks real, smells real, taste real, and acts like it's injured, and panicked. Some times you can find small minnows in a jar that have been pickled, these are awesome, so are frozen shad -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Mojo SpecTastic "WIGGLE" rig, SpecTastic Thread, Boomerang Fishing Pro. ,Stand Out Hooks ,Stand Out Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

Not that there's anything wrong with using a fly rod to fish any legal way you want to fish, but fly rod notwithstanding if you ain't fishing with a fly you ain't fly fishing. I said:

Maybe I need to drink more coffee before posting such gibberishg And Ken said: Fishing with bait isn't fly fishing, it's bait fishing. Where he pointed out the error of my ways. Can't argue with that. I'm not going to get into any contest about what is or isn't "fly fishing" - I'll leave it up to IGFA and othersg. I'm always changing things, adding stuff, doctoring up materials, messing around - I'd probably not throw pure plastic or pure anything without adding paint, metal, fur, glitter, feathers, rubber or something. As long as it catches bass, I don't care. The line blurs when having legal fun g Going fishing! John |
