my 97 yamaha is spewing out gas from the carb i'm a new boat owner
please help boat has sat for almost a year

Is it a two-stroke? My first guess would be something keeping a reed valve
open, as the piston comes back up the bore, causing blow back. The reed
valves, if the engine is equipped with them, are mounted between the carbs
and the cylinders.
how did you notice this? Is there an airbox, or air filters on the carbs?
Lack of filters could have allowed something down the airways, and lodged
into a reed, holding it open.

Have you done anything to the exhaust recently? Changes in the exhaust can
cause what you describe, on a 2 stroke. I'm still going with the stuck reed
valve theory.
Is it a 2 stroke?
