Do black dyed materials seem thinner, sparser...?

It is because of the difficulty in hot dyeing materials jet black. The
dyebath has to be hotter, more acid is required, and more dye. This
damages the material irreparably. Also many black dyed materials are
not colour fast anyway, and the dye will come off on your fingers.
This is a result of using too much dye in the bath, and not getting it
hot enough.

Cold dyed materials donīt suffer from this problem.

Also, many suppliers leave black dyed materials in the bath a lot
longer in the hope of increasing the depth of shade. This does not
work, but the longer exposure to the hot acid damages the material
more.

I'm guessing that the previous responses are correct. If you do your own
dyeing, try using human hair dye. You can get the cheapest, like Lady
Clarol, at a beauticians supply store. Get the kit or just the dye plus
20% developer and use just enough to rub into the material. Allow to
set, rinse thoroughly and air dry. You'll get a deep black without
damaging or thinniing the material.

to see if I can avoid some of these problems. Your article looks like it
