Don't forget the rest of that paragraph which allows undertaking in specific
conditions:
"In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at
similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than
traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in
your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right."
Interestingly the use of the magic MUST NOT wording is missing so presumably
Para 242 is advisory and not reflecting a legal requirement. As I understand
it the offence of nearside overtaking was removed many years ago and currently
the offences of careless or worse driving are used. Must go and rummage in
the law books to check.
