Default Idea for aligning canoe on stream.

I have an idea for fishing creeks from a canoe. Actually I got the
idea from a show I saw last week. They were fishing for trout out of a
rowboat. They threw a chain out of the bow of the boat and let it drag
along the bottom. It kept the boat aligned nicely with the shore. I
was thinking about doing the same thing with my canoe. I wouldn't need
much weight, just enough to drag the bottom and keep my canoe
straight. I'd use it in the slow deep sections. The question is what
to use. I was think about some sort of cable or chain that is covered
so it won't make noise while it scrapes the bottom. Maybe a foot long
piece of chain tied to some rope. Also something that won't get stuck.

Any ideas? Anyone ever tried this? It seems like it would work unless
the wind is stronger than the current.

To cut down the wind blown drift on my canoe, I have one of the Rocker
Stoppers
http://www.davisnet.com/marine/produ....asp?pnum=0352 I got
it at Boat US some years ago. I had to weight one portion to keep it from
floating up. Just another idea. The chain might ( or might not ) be better.

Any decent marine dealer will have sections of plastic coated chain used for
anchor chain. I use them because he don't clank around, and they last
better in the wet environment. I imagine for your application the plastic
coating might start to wear off after a while, but nothing dragged along the
bottom will last for ever.

The were used in old windows, made of iron, maybe a foot long, 2-3: in
dia with a hole to tie a line to on one end, I think they are still
common, I had 3 or 4.

Just curious. What does AJH stand for? Every time I see your handle on a
psot I think AHJ which is a fire alarm term for "Authority Having
Jurisdiction." ie. State Fire Marshall, city fire department Fire System
inspector, etc...

Common problem for river fishing..

I think I saw somebody talking about this kind of solutions with a section
of old tire included. Look on riversmallies.com. Try the forums and search
for chain or somehting similar.

Carry a small mesh bag in the canoe. Pick up the rocks you need- ( current
vs wieght of canoe). And you have it. When your done empty the mesh bag and
you dont have to listen to it rattle around in the boat. Indian.
