Canoe...Fishfinder...Am I crazy?

Okay, so I have $100 bucks left to spend on fishing junk. (My mom gave
me a $200 visa giftcard for Xmas..decided it was going towards fishing,
and couldnt be spent on anything sensible...like gas....)

Anyways...anyone think I could put a fish finder in the canoe.....?

I kinda think a regular marine battery is out of the question, it being
a 15'6" canoe and all. Anyone know of any decent depthfinders that would
run on regular/rechargeable batteries...maybe D cells or something?

....or should I just scrap the idea and buy another rod/reel combo?

Couple of different ways to go. Fishing Buddy portable. A lot of float
tubers go this way. A Piranha or Eagle for about $90 at Wal-mart and other
places. And a small rechargeable battery. Gel Cells, they run the finder
all day. Just have to have a good charger for them, or they die. Small
motorcycle wet cell battery is also a good choice. Can either attach the
transducer to the bottom of the canoe and shoot through the hull or attached
to a board and clamp to the side of the canoe. Look at some of the Kayak

There are any of a number of fishfinders that will do the trick. I had a
Fish ID that used a battery Pack of D -Cells.

You could easily run any fishfinder off of 12V 7AH gell cell for several
days between recharges.

I think Cabelas sells the batteries for around 24.95. I get them for a
fraction of that for alarm backups for my alarm company.

If you went to a 12V 4AH battery it would still run a fish finder for a day
or two between charges.

Hi All U ROFFers,

In California and in British Columbia, Canada, I have seen more Bottom Line
"Fish'n Buddy" portable fish locator/bottom finders being used that are
about $150+USD new on the web. Most fly shops will not be carrieing them
because they are at about their wholsale price in discount stores.

They take 3 each "C" cell batteries and they run for a long time on them.
We fished a week in BC lakes this last June on one set of 3 standard "C"
batteries. For most of us just having 6 new "C" cell batteries would set us
up for a normal week fishing trip or more.

The portable "Fish'n Buddy" is prefect for float tubes, v-boats, pontoon
boats, canoes, kayaks and small boats.

Naturally something new could be coming out as we speak.

Just read this ng today; I have the oldest Fishin Buddy...I leave it on
the entire time I'm anchored; fish all summer (live on an inland lake) ;
only use 6 batteries all season. Thought the 9 degree cone angle would
be bead, but works fine! Fish from and OLD 14' rowboat. (I'm old, too)

can you be moving in your boat or do you need to be just drifting?

Only have an 8hp Johnson; can use fish finder at slowest speed, or with
the trolling motor. I feel I'd pass by too fast at higher speed, even
if I could.
BTW, husband has a Piranha 1, which takes 6 or 8 AA batteries, and (for
him) works great. We live on 100 acre lake; connects to 2 others a bit
larger. He fishes from a canoe, too; last 2 years caught several 4#
Walleyes, too, besides Bass.
