Billboard aren't free press. They are (private) media for conveying commercial messages. The owners of this media are free to reject any message they deem not in their best interests. Hint: Buy your own billboard. Because, among other things, of the "Lady Bird Johnson act it's diffiult to find legal sites for bill boards that already sewed up by the "big boys." If the "big boys" together decide that a certain set of ads should not be placed, it will be difficult to find another placement site. But, yeah, it's good advice to tell folks on the fringe to buy their own bill boards. Bill boards are truly unique in that once posted it's difficult to censor. Thus, you reach folks who might not want to watch the television networks or read the news outlets that let your view of the world see the light of day. The John Birch Society, for example, was able to but a few billboard ads back in 1980. I doubt that a similar organization could buy highly visible space today. |

Along interstate highways. Buy some along local arterials. If the "big boys" together decide that a certain set of ads should not be placed, it will be difficult to find another placement site. But, yeah, it's good advice to tell folks on the fringe to buy their own bill boards. Being 'on the fringe' suggests that the message in question won't be popular. If its supporters have any economic sense, they'll choose a marketing channel that will generate more positive impressions. -- Paul Hovnanian ------------------------------------------------------------------ Drugs may be the road to nowhere, but at least they're the scenic route! |
