From pull testing with a scale, I have found that the Palomar knot is as
strong
as any knot when first tied. After a few hard (fish) pulls the Palomar knot
tends to weaken and break.

Yes, It's stress (force per unit area) that breaks things, not just force. If
you wrap the line around a few times, you can spread the force over a
larger area and reduce the stress.

However, I'm guessing that some knots "pinch up" after use more than others,
and create stress concentrations that break the line.
