Default newsgroup server reform

Well, it looks like individual.net pulled their free service as
threatened. Has anyone found a replacement free news server?

I'm paying the 10 Euros a year for individual.net. They make it easy (if
you hit the button for English!!), its a reasonable rate for a dependable
service. I think its worth it.

Always looking for a handout, eh? ;-) I switched to Supernews (for
other reasons), but it'll cost you a whopping $4.95 a month, without
binaries. Not a bad deal for access to this encylopedia of knowledge and
class we call roff.

I looked at their site just now, and it seems like its a mission to pay
them! Something about some european account and a bank transfer... I
don't mind the rate, but I guess I have to go back and see how to pay
them.

OTOH, with this instantaneous access via google, this might be
something to consider! I just posted the message 5 minutes ago, and
already got replies!

Ugh. Don't tell me that, until this morning, you could do the
transaction online! I'm in the process of instructing my bank to wire
10 Euros (about $14), but the transfer fee is more than twice that
amount!

I find the google option works quite well (sans spelling checker,
unfortunately).

That's interesting. Google is a very efficient enterprise. It looks like
they may be serious about Usenet. OTOH, once Google effectively owns the
Internet, which I believe is their goal, you might find that they'll
start charging you.

(If I held a stake in Supernews or some similar Usenet service, I'd sell
it immediately.)

O.k., I won't tell you that.

But, of course, I can't stop Scott or anyone else from doing so.

$14?! Whew!

If Google would offer a free Usenet server instead of their web-based
service that would solve your spell-check problem. Unfortunately, you
would almost certainly start seeing advertisements in each post. In a
Fortenberry post that would either be an ad for cheap, ****ty beer or
extremely expensive fly rods.
