Checked with my home owners insurance company this morning and found out I
can add sporting equipment to my current policy for 65 cents per thousand. A deductible of 25 dollars will apply. This is for 1 year coverage. May go this route and just check the rods through carrying a 5 piece on for backup. Thanks to all who responded. Jack |

Jack FWIW, if you haven't already, you might wish to make sure of what perils apply to the coverage, if the policy/rider requires evidence of theft (or excludes "mysterious disappearance"), excludes "accidental damages," what off-premise coverages apply, etc. Also, you may wish to check as to whether it is "ACV" (A ctual C ash V alue) or "Replacement Cost" (keep in mind replacement cost may require you to actually replace the item before the complete amount is paid to you). IOW, make sure you are getting coverage(s) as you wish/expect at a premium that makes economic sense - one can insure just about anything against just about anything - the cost of the premium, however, just like your mileage, may vary. If you find the coverage offered isn't what you want/expect, you may wish to look into an "inland marine" policy. TC, R |

Jack I'm more concerned that my stuff doesn't get to my trip destination than it getting totally lost. It's uncommon for luggage to get "totally" lost but it is relatively common that luggage gets delayed. Like in Jon's example, that delay can ruin your trip. When I went to Penns, my rods didn't arrive on the plane with me. Mike M. graciously loaned me a rod. To the airlines credit, my rod arrived the next day and the airline delivered it to me by courier to a place about 50? miles from the airport. Willi |

Willi I am more concerned with some baggage handler stealing the checked rods. I have been that route. I carry a 5 piece on to be sure I have a rod. I agree that totally lost baggage is a rarity. |

Since you didn't report a happy ending, I'll assume that you weren't able to bring about any sort of satisfactory resolution to this matter. Was there any indication that the airline (or anyone else, for that matter) made a serious effort to deal with it? Wolfgang |

Wolfgang nope, i didn't...i suppose i could have made an insurance claim. more trouble than it was worth, in my opinion and from past experience. ever tried to itemize and value used flies, stuff, vest for insurance purposes? the trouble wasn't worth it, so i just let it go. the bag was searched by the fed agency...i had one of those cards in the bag. anyway, i bought a new vest from wally, and collecting new flies ain't such a bad recreation. g jeff |

Airports staffed with minimum wage fly fishermen probably do put your checked gear at risk. One nice thing about even smaller airports like West Yellowstone is that you watch the TSA people inspect your baggage - carryon and checked. -- Charlie... http://www.chocphoto.com |

If for no other reason, it makes it more likely that you'll be included in any class action suits that come out of this cluster****. -- Scott Reverse name to reply |

Willi I have the same concerns, as I have read horror stories on the internet about luggage (fly-fishing equipment) mistreated, lost, or stolen by the airline handlers. In my case, I'll have to transfer planes which adds another twist. Jim told me last year the airlines let him carry on the fishpond rod bag with three rods packed inside: http://www.sanjoseflyshop.com/rodcases.asp#Fishpond I also see Orvis makes a nice carry-on which meets the airline requirements and will fill all my needs for the trip. http://www.orvis.com/store/product_c...449&shop_i d= -tom |
