Default trim tab question

I notice that most of the trim tabs for an 18' boat size range are 9x12",
with a few even wider.

Why not smaller? Is it that smaller than this would not give enough lift
in all situations? I want to be sure and get enough lift, but I also don't
want to go wider than necessary on the transom.
