After 18 years of service to my company they've informed me and 120 of
my compatriots that our services will no longer be required after June
or there abouts. So... my plans to fish with Jeff and any other North
Calahackians we could rope into it in October are squished. WTF, I
probably would have been skewered by a wild boar or bitten by a coral
snake.

Sorry to hear that. It wouldn't seem, given the above to be too
personal - what do you do?

That sucks, sorry to hear it.

Remember the old saw; when one door closes another one opens.

Have you considered Amway products ? ;-)

I'm going to be busy. I'm chief steward for the Union. Since we are in
a multi-city local and the president lives 75 miles away I'm going to
be point man for the affected workers when it comes to dealings with
them and the state, federal and company bureaucracies. We qualify
under the Fed and State Mass Layoffs acts and are supposedly going to
have everyone from the U.S. Department of Labor to the local food
pantries meeting with us.

I'm a healthy 54 year old. I'm in much better shape than the two guys
in my department who are my age and have recently gotten out from
under the knife with heart surgery. They're screwed. I'll get by.
There may or may not be a severance package, we'll see how our
meetings with management turnout. And if they hit their target date of
the end of June I'll be very surprised. I wouldn't be surprised
(although I can't count on it) if I'm still there in September. But by
any calculation a trip to North Carolina in October is out of the
question now.

noooo!!!! sorry to hear about the job george. guess you were doing too
good of a job for the union and employees. but...usully, less work
means more fishing time...and the union dues oughta count for
something...so tell them it's a recruitment trip to nc. g

seriously, hope it all works out. doubt you'll have any trouble finding
new work and hopefully one that suits your talents and needs and
interests. there will be other opportunities to fish together.
anticlaves got no rules, no expectations, and no regrets...

best...

Thanks. And I *will* make it out there one of these Octobers. I was
looking forward to this more than I was anticipating going to Montana
last year, so it sucks big time.

George,

Sorry to hear of your employment situation. Don't be discouraged,
however. Ten years ago I was downsized by my employer of 23 years. The
owner decided to sell the business, and in order to make the tooling
division look more profitable, several senior empoyees were let go,
along with enough younger ones to avoid problems with the age
discrimination thingy. So here I was, a senior project manager, 56
years old, with no immediate prospects. I did receive job offers from
some of my "connections", but all would have involved relocating,
which was not an option. I looked through all the want ads, submitted
resumes, and within 5 weeks, I had a sales job in a related field.
Somewhat less money, and far fewer perks, but it carried me nicely
into retirement.

Keep your eyes and ears open, and I'm sure something will turn up for
you. While you're handling the union business, keep in mind that your
main responsibility is to yourself and your family, and keep yourself
opento all options.

Best of luck.

George Adams
