The NRA, and various hunting groups are adamantly against John Kerry
because he is anti assault weapons. How many hunters are psycho enough to want to hunt a deer with a assault weapon? In the oct issue of Field And Stream, the group "vote your sport" says "The truth is that John Kerry has voted against your gun and Hunting rights over 50 Times in 20 years". When has he ever voted against hunting rights? Unless psycho hunters think shooting 50 bullets into a deer or bird in rapid succession is a right of hunters. George Bush's choice for the position of undersecretary for natural resources and the environement was Mark Rey. Mark Rey was also keynote speaker for the "alliance for America". What is that organizations stance regarding the environment? ""Our goal is to destroy, to eradicate the environmental movement. We want to be able to exploit the environment for private gain, absolutely." Ron Arnold, founder, Alliance for America." How has George Bush's Secretary of the Interior treated lands that could be used as wilderness for hunting and fishing? His Secretary of the Interior has declared that not another inch of land will be added to Wilderness. |

I'm a hunter and owner of several guns. I wouldn't vote for Bush if you
pointed an assult weapon at my head and insisted ( won't happen this year, but four more like the last four and ? ), partly BECAUSE I'm a hunter and value thoughtful environmental policy. The basic Republican platform doesn't offer much to anyone except the extremely rich. Unfortunately for them, there aren't enough very rich people to elect anyone, SO, they artfully woo one issue "knee jerk voters." The NRA voter is a perfect example. I used to be a member, and I used to train dogs for a NRA lobbiest. But they have so far stepped over the bounds of reason that I consider them a THREAT to my guns now, "bad eggs" always eventually ruin things for the majority and the NRA is now so extreme as to be a bad egg. My lobbiest customer went elsewhere when I made it clear I felt that voting for Bush because NRA says to is an incredibly stupid thing for an outdoorsman to do. The Reps have tacked on several other knee jerk groups ... none big enough, alone, to matter that much, but combined a huge number of exceedingly mindless and one-sided people ...like Bush himself, on their particular "issue" they are "always right" and never question themselves. Scary group of alliances, scary leader. |

It mystifies me. Probably for the same reasons that many 'environmentalists' support the Wise Use political standpoint. They start attacking their own protectors, accusing them of being the enemy. These outdoors types think that environmental groups are actually harming their interests by trying to keep them out of the environment, and supporting Bush will make more of the wilderness accessible to them, therefore Bush = good, Environmentalists = bad. Check out http://www.cdfe.org/wiseuse.htm to read how Orwellian things have become. You end up actally thinking that the Sierra Club is evil, and that opening up Wilderness areas to developement and the public is good. --riverman |

Before the last election I was chatting with a client that had a nice Chesapeake Bay Retriever I was training, a man with whom I had hunted a couple times. He mentioned that he had decided to vote for Bush. I said something to the effect of "But, Dale, Gore is a much stronger supporter of the environment." Dale replied, "Yeah I like Gore better for most things, but I want to keep my guns." That, is a grade A, classic, "one issue ... knee jerk" |

That, is a grade A, classic, "one issue ... knee jerk" Not only that, but Dale should know that the President has no power to take away our guns. Presidents do not make laws. I agree with George Cleveland; shooting is fun. And I enjoy taking my Brittany out into the fields and woods in the fall and looking for birds, even if I don't get to do any shooting. (I usually miss, anyway.) It seems to me the NRA leadership is constantly trying to scare us into believing that "the government" is on the verge of confiscating our guns, for the purpose of prodding us into us sending them our money--which is the source of their (no doubt handsome) salaries. Reminds me of Al Capone's way to make money: Tell businessmen "You give me money, and I'll make sure nothing bad happens to your store." Except for a few Senators and Congressmen from high urbanized areas, where random shooting are a problem (which gun laws won't prevent), our legislators know that voting for a gun-confiscation law, or even sounding like they might vote for one, is political suicide. Aside from that, a significant number of legislators themselves enjoy hunting and are simpatico with others who share that pleasure, and also want to preserve shooting sports for themselves. We need to be less paranoid about gun ownership. vince |

Fully automatic weapons are very useful when shooting deer on the run.
