Rattle Traps

yeah, I know kinda cold to be talking about traps up here in Michigan.
But I'm looking for a reel just for them, whats a good gear ratio and
why.

I really only fish them in one lake that I tournament fish on. I fish a
shallow flat that has lots of sand, small rock and some sparse weeds.
The depth is about 2-4' max. the water is clear.

Fast retrieve with a medium action rod?

Depends on what else you want to use it for.

Sounds fast, but you know that if you want to slow it down, you can. But...
there's always a but.

That reel would probably be too fast for much anything else I'd want to use
it for. I usually stick to the 6:1 ratio.

Other crankbaits would benefit from a 5:1.

I've had luck with them by fast jerking them into the bottom on
gravel, I spose sand would be close to that. I use a medium heavy 7'
rod .

I cam't see where the gear ratio would make a lot of difference in numbersd
of fish caught unless either you have a tendency to fish to fast, or you
fish limited targets and then want to get the bait in fast to hit the next
target.

ie.

If you fish to fast you may want to consider a 5:1 reel. I use one on my
regular crankbait rod.

If you are fishing limited grassbeds where you cast to the target from a
distance, fish it, and then burn the lure in so you can hit the next target
quickly consider a 7:1 reel.

Otherwise I see no reason not to use the same 6:1 reel you use for
everything else. If you have good discipline and no major problems with
your hands or arms there isn't much you can't do with it.

All that being said. All my bait casters except 2 are the regular 6:1 or
whatever it is. I have one 5:1 for crankbaits, and one 7:1 for buzzbaits
(to surface it quickly only).
