Default Brook trout in Ohio?

I just received the Ohio DNR's magazine; in it, it's listing all the
projects that it has supposedly completed with. One of the projects was
12,000 brook trout released into the tribs of the Chagrin in the project's
final year...anyone know anything about this and how well these fish have
held up?

It's been up and down. The last I had heard, the hatchery stock they had
were infected and they were canceling the project early. This is an
interesting branch of the hatchery discussions here of late- the ODNR was
using similar (identical?) strains of brook trout for a while to "help" the
native population.

There are some older updates he

And some good project reports if you dig around he

This isn't at all a burgeoning fishing opportunity, more like a small
population trying to hang on by its fingernails (bad metaphor, but you know
what I mean...) Some good work is being done along the tributaries with
conservation easements and stream improvement, hopefully the last remaining
population of wild brookies in Ohio can survive.

Cool stuff. Under "Projects", the report "Introduction to Brook Trout
in Sulfur Springs" has a fascinating Hole Classification and Population
Summary (Appendix A), hole-by-hole. Rootin' for those guys to hang in
there.

Yeh. Can you imagine doing that for a high school project?

I've used that report to go exploring. Had waders on, but no fly rod in
hand. The director of that program has spoken to our TU chapter, very
interesting stuff. It really is a lovely watershed and those little fishies
are doing pretty well, considering the condition of Ohio's rivers and
streams:

And the report from the Ohio EPA:

I'd like to know if you hear...the Chagrin river is my old stompin'
grounds...I practically grew up on that river. It's good to hear
some native fish restoration is going on. 20 years ago or so we
knew some people who had some land with a creek in the East Branch
watershed, and they always said there were brook trout in it.

Are they using fry raised from fish native to the watershed, or
some other source of brook trout?

Jon.
