Default Davis Lake CA report

Hi All,

I was just fishing Davis Lake in Nor Cal with my friend Rick Jorgensen and
local Davis Lake guide Don Rotsma. We fished Saturday and Sunday while there
was a big fishing derby being held. At first we were a little upset that we
would not have good fishing but the only small downside was it took a little
longer than normal to launch Don's new 19' bass boat.

Davis is 7 miles long and has miles of fishable shoreline. Don said the
damsel fly hatch was slowed by the recent cold weather but was getting
better daily with the warm weather.

We fished from 8am till about 3pm on Saturday and Sunday finding miles of
open shallow water with tons of large hot Rainbow trout from 16 to over 20
inches long. A good friend Evan Jenkins and his wife Kati where there too
and Evan landed a 24" Rainbow that would have won the derby but he was not
entered in it.

We went out Saturday even for the blood midge emergence but nothing
happened. Don said this is right at sunset and it is usually very
spectacular but nothing happened. Don thinks it should get going very soon
with all this warm weather.

We fished floating lines with 12' leaders to 3x or 4x FC and ~one inch
slender dark colored (dk olive, dk brown and even black) damsel fly nymphs.
Don anchored the boat sideways to wind with two anchors. We cast down wind
to working fish from about 9am till 2pm.

Don said the damsel fly hatch is the best he has seen on the lake in the
past 3 season and it has just really gotten started.

Don lives on the lake and has never caught a pike while fishing or guiding.
I have never seen more large working trout in any lake here or in BC.

Try to get up there in the next 30 days if you can to see this fabulous
fishery. Feel free to email Don or look at his web site for a current fish
report.
